Have a 1996 Ford Taurus. Loud clunking noise coming from left rear strut. Believe the 'bellows' or protective covering for the strut shaft is loose and rattling. Can I just remove it to eliminate the clunking noise? Tried to tie it in place with tie wrap and that worked for one day until it came loose. Can I stuff some foam rubber in there to eliminate the noise? The 'bellows' seems to ring in there like a bell.

Yes you can remove it but that is a dust protector and without it the strut seal may fail.

very common problem is the sway bay end links that attach to the strut from the sway bar. They sound like a light chuckling knock over bumps. The bushings that hold the subframe up wear or the bolts loosed due to the bushings wearing. usually the rear ones The bushings are 2 piece ,upper and lower Tighten with 18mm socket

could be outer or inner cv. or a cv bolt that is loose. jack both wheels up and start the car. put it into a gear and check. take care though. this makes finding annoyances like that easier. use a hose against your ear (like a doctor!) to localise the noise.

SOURCE: 2.2 95 cavalier front clunking noise when turning

Usually a clunking sound is CV joints, however, take the two bottom bolts off first, make sure you don't over extend the cv shaft. It's better to have another person to hold the strut while you take the nuts off on top. I just replaced mine on my Caddy because the dampening was shot. I have never heard of struts clunking when turning. Always CV's.

Clunk noise when turning

Check the cv shaft boots, if they are torn the grease inside will have come out and now the joints inside are worn out. Worn cv joints will cause noises when turning.

Struts noise?

I would tend to believe it's more likely a worn sway bar bushing or link if it's a rattle or a small clunk, if it's a loud clunk probably a strut, try bouncing he back of the car when parked, if you get the clunk probably a strut if only when driving, turning, braking probably just a bushing on the sway bar

Strut noise. sounds like shaft is hitting strut mount.

It shouldn't matter too much unless the car is being driven very ******* very undulating road surfaces.
If you used non genuine struts, especially Chinese brands then this noise can be quite apparent almost immediately.

When you say yellow bellows, I presume you mean bump stops.

My car started clunking in the rear near the tire, especially when I turn left

Check your top shock absorber and/or strut mounts, they may have been hammered by the many bumps and stripped out the mounting hardware on top just an eighth of an inch which will cause super loud bangs as that side wobbles up and down and hits into the Body Metal. These can get dangerous if left loose at all, my old boss said his Taurus would change lanes by itself at 120 Km/hr in the rain!

Does a 2002 taurus have wheel barrings

Possibilities are:
  1. Bad wheel bearing
  2. Bad tie rod
  3. Bad ball joint
  4. Bad strut
  5. Loose lug nuts
Most cases it's a wheel bearing but since you're getting a loud noise too, it could very well be a bad ball joint or tie rod end.

Have a clunking noise problem coming from the back of my "03 Toyota Avalon. Every time I go over bumps it clunks. Can't tell where its coming from. Sometimes sounds likr the left side and...

Did you check your spare tire? Sometimes either it was not tightened down properly or the jack or handle works loose. Since you can't tell where the clunking sound is coming from, you need to start with the basics to zero in on the problem. You might to want to take everything out of your trunk and see if the problem goes away.

Replaced struts on 1999 ford taurus but when turn left or hit a bump makes a clunck noise sometimes

Sounds like somthing is loose. Identify the corner and pull that unit apart. If you find no loosness, replace strut.
This presumes no clunk noise until this repair event.

Loud noise in rear of car. sounds like a loose 2003 ford taurus

it is quite possible that you have a bad strut mount, noticeable by rubber moving from metal, or a leaking strut, looking at the strut you would see hydraulic fluid on it. also sometimes removal and disassembly is the only way to tell. also you could check for bad sway bar links or bushings. hope this helps
