My 1996 Honda Civic has issues with volume control. When I turn the volume knob on my stereo system, the volume will either increase, decrease, or stay the same independent of which way I turn the knob.
(ie. Turning the knob clockwise will either increase the volume, decrease the volume, or do nothing)
When the volume works properly or not is also independent of time (sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't)
Does anyone know what the problem is?
This is a known problem with the factory units and no, there is no fix. There is a series of checks you can do, but short of that the only option has been to replace the unit. I have included the graphic for the checks, other than that it is not fixable.

Thanks for everyones feedback, I thought I was the only one having this problem. I also have a 1996 Honda Civic LX Sedan, and the volume control bugs me with the same issues. Just the other day I started to push the radio unit around to see if that worked, and it does sometimes. I thought that maybe the entire unit shifted, and I needed to shift it back in place. Does your radio also have a fuzzy noise in the beginning when you turn it on, and then it goes away? Thanks, I will check the illustration out.

my 1996 civic does the same thing. i find the best way for me to control the volume in to push the knob down and turn to the left to increase volume and down and turn to the right to decrease volume. it doesn't work all the time, and it is very annoying...
