1993 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera won't turn over (crank)

My 1993 Oldsmobile Cutlass Ciera stopped and now won't turn over (crank). This morning I was backing out of the driveway when the car died. It wouldn't even grunt when I tried to restart. The battery is good, the radio, horn, door locks and windows work fine. The headlights shine brightly and won't dim when I turn the ignition key. I replaced the starter solenoid but still no grunt. After trying all of this, I jerked on the shifter when it was in park and again in neutral. There is no change. I still won't turn over (crank). /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;}

Per your previous reply, I checked (1) condition of the oil; (2) rotated the crankshift; (3) battery to starter motor; (4) ground cable. The oil is dirty but the motor isn't tied up. Following are the other things I have done since your last reply. When I turn the ignition with the headlights on, a load isn't drawn. I had the the starter and the ignition module tested. Both are good. What must I do next?

I got the car started but it immediately shut off. When I tried to start it the second time, It wouldn't turn over. The starter would wouldn't engage the fly wheel. I rotated the the crank pulley by hand to see if the engine would turn easily and it did. Next, I tried starting the the engine again and it did start. I shut it off and tried starting it again. Now it's runs fine now. What happened and how can I prevent this from happening again? I'm accepting your answer as the remedy. What's puzzling is I only took the starter and ignition module off to have them tested and replaced them. Please answer this final question. What happened and how can I prevent this from happening again? Your money is forthcoming but if I click the "Accept" I will lose communication with you. Thank you for all you help.

First step is see the Condition of the oil.
Them you need to see if the ENGINE is NOT LOCKED UP.
To Do that, you will need a Rachet and Socket to Try TURN the CRANKSHAFT pulley by Hand.
If you are ABLE to Rotate,
And the Battery is good, Check all the Connection from the BATTERY to the STarter motor,
And the Ground Cable. From battery To the Chassis and the Bolt at the Transmission.

But if you are Unable to TURN over the Crankshaft Pulley.
The Engine is Locked up.
And will need to take a Opinion of a Mechanic .
To be sure Of the problem and the condition that may affect to the ENGINE went damaged.

I hope this help on your problem.

Thank you for use fixya...

    Ok...

On the starter motor. you will see 2 Wires 1 Red, from the Battery, the other Violet from the Starter Relay or Neutro Safetly Switch.

Ok.. Check both of the Wires.

    Check the Battry terminals.

Them Make a BYPASS between Red and Violet Wires For a few second only to see if the Starter motor work. if not Go to #2. If yes, Go to #1--

#1---- Remove the Bypass and Locate the Neutro Safetly Switch on the Transmission

Disconnect and make a BYPASS between the Yellow wire and the Violet wire. Them try to start

From the Ignition switch with the Key. If start Replace the Neutro safetly switch.

#2---- Remove the Battery and take to any Autoparts to make a Test. If the Battery pass the Test.

Replace the Starter motor, If not Pass The Test Replace the Battery..

If after this Not crank. Make a good ground between the Battery and the Engine block.

And Return to step # 1...

Ok.. I hope this help on your problem.

Feel free to ASK anything you want.

    Thank you ...
