I smell gas when driving my 97 land rover discovery. I do already know I need a fuel pump. Is the gas coming from too much being injected into the engine, thus leaking out because of the bad fuel pump? What should I do to keep the gas contained?

I know that if a fuel pressure regulator is bad it will emit the fuel smell under hood. but just be sure you have no fuel leaks in the fuel lines first. good-day !

have someone pull out the EVAP cannister (under vehicle, near fuel tank. it prob. needs to be replaced. if you can open it up, see if there is alot of dust inside, if so, replace with new one.
Start with the fuel cutoff......sometimes they need to be reset. Step 2 would be the the fuel relay.........I doubt that the fuel pump is not working as you said you can hear it engage. Let me know if you need anymore help.
one or more cylinders my not be firing, is it a gas or diesel? if gas check for loose spark plug wires or ignition coil (s) also fuel system if diesel check fuel injection pump
I had that issue and found out that I had to push in in slightly and tune the cover withthe other hand to get it tight. if you try to get it tootight it would come off again. Also the tow top hoses need to be intalled b4 you try to tighten the black cover or screw or what ever that is called!
Under the hood next to the firewall is your multi-function box. It controls fuel and other things in your truck. You can pull your fuel supply line loose at the back of the injection rail and have someone turn the key on to see if you are getting fuel. If you are not, you will need test for power to the multi-function box and fuel pump. If you don't have a basic understanding of how to test for power to these components, my advice will not be much of an immediate help.

A "main" relay can control multiple circuits, primarily for the ignition..
advise to him was to change the ignition module..
