My fuel pump on a 2006 Ford Escape does not come on unless I hook up a ground directly to the negative terminal on the fuel pump than it will kick in with the ignition turned on, but won't go off even once the fuel system is pressurized. I have checked all relays and fuses and the inertia switch. I was told with me putting the negative directly to the fuel pump I was just jumping a bad connection somewhere but have no idea where. Very frustrating....

Hi Patrick Fleishman, I want to help you with your question, but I need more information from you. Can you please add details in the comment box? Unfortunately I do not have your wiring diagram, but I would interrogate the pump relay socket with a volt/ohmmeter. First look for terminals in the socket that are hot with the key on and hot with the key off. If your pump turns on with a ground signal, there should be at most one 12volt terminal. The relay is normally turned on by the pcm. When it is turned on, it connects a ground at the relay socket to the negative pump lead. Therefore, you should be able to turn on the pump by grounding that terminal. If you can, you will know that the circuit from the relay to the pump is good. Just be careful not to put a ground to the 12volt terminal in the socket (that's why you have to find that terminal first). Am I making sense?

SOURCE: put in new starter.car wont

You need to go over every connection and make sure every one of them are snapped in tight and no loose ones exist, there has to be a wire or something loose or not connected, if all wires matched back up you have to assume it has one that is not making a good connection good luck with finding it.

SOURCE: REPLACING NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL

The large one goes to the engine block and the little one goes to the sheetmetal of the right wheelwell. Those little ones often pull loose such that you can't imagine where it came from, it was a 5/16" headed screw into the sheet metal.

There is also a couple of bare naked ground cables that also grounds your transmission with your starter and vehicle frame close to the starter. If these get pulled in two when changing out an engine for example you will get all kinds of odd blinker problems, gauges reading off the chart full and then empty, you will swear the thing is possessed.

You could make your own and add it into the GM grounding system already in place. Bolt the big end to the block, put a screw thru a handy frame hole where ever it lays across one and finish with a smaller self tapping screw right into the fender well right thru the cable.

I am about to have the same problem with my 2002 ZX2. My shop called the Ford dealer and they can replace it for $450.00...
seems like an awful lot for a battery cable.

SOURCE: 94 ford Tarus ,,had fuel problem,,replaced fuel

Fuel shut off switch should be located in the trunk on the same side you fill your tank on. The switch is guarder and you will have to figure out which way to press it

My new fuel pump only primes when wired direct?

Well you need to get out the DVOM - digital volt ohm meter an check for battery voltage at the fuel pump relay ! if you replaced it you saw the holes it plugs into in the relay / fuse box ? Put you volt meter on the 20 volt scale , hook the black lead to the battery negative or a good engine ground an take the red lead an touch - don't stick it in an spread the terminals . Two of the holes should have battery voltage ,if not check the EEC power relay ! If you find voltage at two holes change the meter to ohms , leave the black connector on a good ground an touch the red to the two holes left , one should be open or OL on the meter , this is the control side from the engine computer . the last hole should show a few ohms resistance , this is down through the wiring to an through the fuel pump to ground . You have two different wiring circuits , control an load side , load side being power to the fuel pump an control side is power an the engine computer supplying a ground energizing the relay closing the contacts in the relay sending battery voltage to the fuel pump. Test don't guess !

Kia spectra 2006

positive side connects to the alternator and negative connects to the floor of the car, holds the voltage of the case at ground potential to protect against electric shock.

Were is the fuel pump relay on a 91 geo tracker also when I hooked power to the fuel pump it dindnt run

When you hooked power directly to the fuel pump, it may not have been grounded properly. If you're running power directly to it, and it is grounded properly, it should work fine, unless the fuel pump itself if bad. There is something called Ohm's law. it says you have to have power and a ground to transfer electricity. I am at a loss on where the fuel pump relay is. If the pump won't work with direct power, I can't imagine it being the relay.

No spark or power to fuel pump

I would first check the fuse labeled 'Fuel pump" first, did you test the fuel pump also to make sure it works independent of the ignition switch? You can do that by using a jumper wire from a 12 volt source and running that to the posiitve pump terminal and a ground wire to the negative terminal to determine if the pump works independent of anything else.

2006 crown vic; the fuel pump, will not kick. changed fuel pump, all fuses and relays. i can ground the pump and make it run all the time. but it will not kick on and off.

From your description, sounds like your pump wants an external pressure regulator - and that the pump is designed to be "always on'. Follow the ground lead back to its source - I suspect that you will find a bad connection (rust or broken). You can test it with an ohm meter (between the ground lead and the car chassis. Wth the key ON, the meter should show a very low resistance to ground. Wth the key off, a very high resistance (or open) to ground.

1989 ford f150 cranks over but wont start, have replaced all the obvious stuff.

does fuel pump run when you turn key to the run position...open gas cap stick in a funel put ear to funnel.. have some one turn key to run position......does check engine light come on when key in run position.......they have two very common problems....first the fuel pump relays and next very common problem is the ground for the ecm...main computer.....look at the battery then look at ground or negative wire you wiil see a smaller wire comming off the terminal. these will got to a bullet looking connector...cut out this connector and hook wires directly. even if not your problem it will be one day...write back if more needed
