Auto transmission does not respond,. dashboard indicator not working. driving third gear only

Codes P0733 and P0736 on a 2002 Jeep Liberty refer to transmission-related issues. P0736 - Reverse Incorrect Ratio: This code indicates that the transmission is not shifting into the reverse gear correctly. Possible causes could include a faulty transmission solenoid, a damaged or worn reverse gear, low transmission fluid level, or internal transmission issues.

There is a switch on the transmission that tells the indicator what gear it's in. It sounds like that switch has gone bad. The indicator lights might be due to the computer picking up a fault with the switch. You should take it in somewhere and get it scanned. You could go to an auto parts store for a free scan but they will probably try to sell you every single part that might cause that code, taking it to a shop and paying them a little money to confirm what part is bad is worth the money in the end.

The transmission was over heating. Have a pressure test done on the transmission as it may have been just good enough for normal driving but not for towing. Did you have the over ride brake on the van released and were the electric brakes releasing. You can fit an external oil cooler to help with the problem as most autos suffer over heat problems when towing.

I would start with a transmission fliud and filter service.

I would then have the trasnmission checked out by a transmission shop. The transmission most of the time has the direct drum band is starting to go. The shops can rebuild it no problem, This is a very common failure wiith the trasnmission.

your bands may need adjusting or the transmission needs to be serviced to find out if it is something more serious

I may have a similar issue, it's hard to tell from your description. My transmission is in 'limp' mode with a fault light on the dashboard. It basically causes the transmission to lock into third gear. Acceleration is poor because you are starting out in third gear. I'll let you know if I sort it out. It could be the switch on the brake pedal. Others have had luck switching that out
