  • Next to the battery there is a diagnostic box. Take a little paperclip and jump between e1 and Te1 with that paperclip. Now go turn the key on and count the flashes. I would write them down as your are seeing them

  • If you have any comments please feel free to leave them here.
  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

Vane Airflow Meter - An earlier MAF sensor. On the air filter hose there will be the VAM sensor. Pull the connector and see if the truck responds better. The code means you have a wiring issue or the sensor needs replace. Piece of cake really.

Under hood, driver side, front engine area, rear of headlight housing, mounted in top of air filter housing is the exact location of this sensor. More less a MAF.

If you have a multi-meter I'd like you to do some testing on the connector. Below are two links to where I have uploaded a couple nice diagnostic diagrams. Print them off and let me know what you find out. This could still be the sensor. If your engine was cold it can run rough until it warms up still.

Tony, I checked the schematic and I think on this engine the sensor needs to be connected to close the circuit on the pump (circuit opening relay) relay coil--safety feature shuts off fuel pump when no air flow.
Will be interesting to see the test results, as the sensor is apparently sensing air flow but computer is not responding with proper injector pulse width.

Pete, do you have M/T or A/T? Also 2WD or 4WD? Need to know to ID pin numbers for ECM. There are 3 different ECMs for this model. If sensor checks out, you will need to check signal continuity to the ECM.

I agree Jeff. I was hoping he would find something wrong with the wiring or sensor before I dropped the possibility of an ECM failure.

Yes, test sensor first, then wiring. Probably not an issue with the ECM. :o)
Where do you live that you are up at this hour? 4:30 AM in Dayton, OH.

No worries, realistically it is a possibility be so getting the pedigree info is not a bad idea. At leat to test it back to the ECM. S.E. Nebraska. 3:30AM here. Soon bedtime though lol.

If you tell me which engine you have, I can also provide the code list.
1989-95 MODELShow do i check a code on my 93 toyota pickup - jturcotte_2396.gif

  1. Make sure the battery voltage is at least 11 volts.
  2. Make sure the throttle valve is fully closed.
  3. Place the gear shift lever in Neutral. Turn all accessories off.
  4. The engine should be at normal operating temperature.
  5. Using a jumper wire, connect terminals TE1 and E1 of the Data Link Connector 1 (DLC1).
  6. Turn the ignition switch ON , but do not start the engine. Read the diagnostic code by the counting the number of flashes of the malfunction indicator lamp.
  7. Codes will flash in numerical order. If no faults are stored, the lamp flashes continuously every 1 / 2 second. This is sometimes called the Normal or System Clear signal.
  8. After the diagnosis check, turn the ignition OFF and remove the jumper wire.
  9. Compare the codes found to the applicable diagnostic code chart. If necessary, refer to the individual component tests in this section. If the component tests are OK, test the wire harness and connectors for shorts, opens and poor connections.

Can a diagnostic connector on 1995 Toyota 4 runner be jumped over with jumper wire to get check engine codes?

There is probably a way to access codes by using a jumper and causing the engine checklight or an integral led to flash in groups. I can't say which pin or pins need jumping.

I suggest you ask the question of google and click on the youtube video.
