This is a 4cyl diesel Beetle. The timing belt broke while driving. Dealer claims no damage done, replaced belt and car was driven for a few weeks. Began to start a bit sluggish, dealer said glowplugs needed to be replaced. During replacement, one of the holes stripped so they had to pull the head to repair. Drove car about twenty miles and the engine quit. Dealer said valve spring broke, engine destroyed. Tough luck. Question is, is it possible that there really was a piston/valve strike when the timing chain broke and the valve finally broke free after a bit of driving some time later. Any thoughts? All the best, Don

My books show it as a interference engine in which case valve damage is most likely to occur
however if that was the case , it would be having a miss from the start and would not run 2 weeks before something happened
if a valve spring breaks there could be valve piston contact but it is doubtful if that would destroy the engine but again breaking valve springs is rather rare on diesel engines
the engine would not just quit but would rattle and bang it's head off then develope a big noisy miss from a hole in the piston
so I suspect a timing belt problem from when they removed/replaced the head after the glo-plug fix or a crank/cam shaft position sensor or wires ( possible faulty connections for the cam shaft)
I would suggest finding an accredited service center for a proper diagnosis and quote for engine repairs

The flashing is telling you that the engine is mis-firing, the dealer will run a test to determine the cylinder that is mis-firing, chances are it is something simple

SOURCE: v.w.jetta gas eng. timing belt broke ? .shut

Hi, im afraid i can only give you bad news im afraid, if the engine was running even on tick over when the belt snapped then this would have caused the valves to smash into the pistons as the top half of engine would have stopped spinning leaving at least 2 valves in the out position but what causes the damage is the bottom half of the engine, as their is no weight on the cams to keep them turning they stop at once but the bottom half the crank has a big weight called the fly wheel now when the belt snapped the cams would have stopped dead but the crank would have carried on turning under its own weight and this is what causes the piston or pistons to hit the valves this then causes the valves to bend and all the valves will need replacing and the whole top end rebuilding with new seals and the new valves and valve seats will need grinding in.

how ever as its only usually the top half that gets damaged you could save yourself some time and money by calling a local breakers yard and see if they have a cylinder head lying around or even a whole engine as the cost of rebuilding you head and engine would cost more than it would to get a second hand cylinder head or if you didnt want to take any chances look into getting a whole engine.

look at the costs involved get a quote off you garage for the head rebuilt and new valves, tell them worse case if it needed complete head rebuild with all new valves and valve seats and all the seals get a price on the whole job then ask them how much it would cost if you supplied a working cylinder head or even whole engine then compare the prices and check with some breakers for cylinder head prices or engine and you should find that a second hand head will work out cheaper than having yours stripped and rebuilt with new parts.

let me know how you get on or if you need further assistance ok

please rate this solution as i have a whole page of unrated posts, thanks

SOURCE: where is the glowplug relay on voyager 2,5 crd

not sure here as the older model i worked on with a izuzu engine or was it toyota was under the bonnet ,what happens here a lot with the electronic is that when some electrical components get cold its affects the function of them ,Now what this old diesel fitter does to old motors and even new ones i might add is to fit a manual overide ,a push button switch on the dash that makes the relay click in manually or a heavier cable from battery direct to heaters via the heavy push button switch ,then when its really cold you give it some manual overide ,say hold button in for the count of ten then crank engine whilst still holding the heaters on ,cant beat some of these old fashioned ways

Trying to find the water pump

On cars that have a timing chain, the water pump is usually mounted on the front of the engine block and is driven by the drive belt. On most cars that have timing belts, the water pump is mounted on the front of the engine as well, but driven by the timing belt and is concealed under the timing belt cover. It is always recommended that the water pump be replaced whenever the timing belt is done because due to variations in timing belt tension, if you reuse the old water pump on a new timing belt, the average life span of the water pump can be measured in weeks. Some folks think that the repair shop is just trying to milk more money out of them, but this is one case where they are right. If you go cheap (and really, the difference in parts is usually after 40-50 USD with about the same amount in additional labor), you will wind up spending the full labor cost of a timing belt job again in a few weeks to replace the pump.

2003 Galant 4cyl .. After not knowing Car timing belt was what broke ..Car was attempted to turn on various times... How will I know if I have to re-built the engine ?

The Galant has an interference engine, when the timing belt breaks the valves stop and the pistons strike them. At the least you need a new head. There is really no way to tell how much damage was done without tearing the engine apart.

Timing belt broke while driving car what internal damage should i check for before trying to replace belt

I'd recommend doing a web (or dealer) search for your specific engine to see if it's an "interference" engine. An interference engine is one where the intake or exhaust valves could come in contact with the pistons if the timing belt were to break. If your engine is NOT an interference engine, you can start to swap out the timing belt with no worries. If it IS an interference engine, and the timing belt broke while you were driving, there could be a great deal of internal damage. It's hard to estimate what the damage could be... it could range from zero damage (unlikely), to broken valves and pistons. You could do a compression test on each cylinder before replacing the belt.

Good luck.

While driving my Beetle. I heard a ticking sound, I needed an oil change, but this is what happened.........I turned the key off and then turned the car back on in the same night. The next morning it did...

Without being there I can only surmise. The timing belt is supposed to be good for 100,000 miles, but many fail long before that.

When they fail, expensive damage occurs. If a 1.8T or TDi diesel engine, then expect over $3000.00 for repairs...... and if the 2.0 gas, about $1400.00

How much to replace a water pump

4cyl $350-$500 V6 $450-$750....Because this vehicle's water pump is timing belt driven, this repair may be costly. If a timing belt service hasn't been done within the last 30K miles, I recommend replacing the following: timing belt, idler and tensioner pulleys. hopefully this help'd

Water pump barring went out on my 1997 rav4. I heard it knocked the pistons into the values? Is that possible?

The water pump is driven by the cam belt and on some vehicles with an interference engine if the water pump failed and cause the cam belt to break then it could cause internal engine damage. Your 1997 Rav4 water pump is driven by the cam belt but is not an interference engine. So, not to worry as no damage has been done. Just replace the water pump and cam belt and all should be well.

1999 Volkswagon beetle turbo diesel injection pump

Was any work just done to this car? Timing belt? It is rare that these pumps go bad but I have seen a few shell out. If you are not familiar with the ALH diesel engine I would not try to replace it. You should take it to a shop that specializes in VW's.
