Steering column there is a button on the underside of my steering colum (center) i was wandering what this is for. i just had my passlock wiring fixed, the car started fine three times. the fourth time i had the same starting problem and the theft system light came on. i looked under the steering column and saw a small access cover that i removed. under the access panel there is a small button. I pushed the button and the car started normally with no theft system light. is this switch a reset for the passlock system? if not what is it for? (fuel pump reset?)

i do still have my manual; it doesn't help at all with the passlock, or button. the manual just says to take the car to the dealer. i am curious what that little button is for. and yes it would be self defeating to reset the passlock, but why did the car start properly and the warning light go off?

If you no longer have your owner's manual, you can download a copy here:

I doubt if that button somehow bypasses or resets the alarm, that would be kind of self-defeating.

If you can discover the purpose of that mysterious button, you might post it back here in case another owner is experiencing the same problem.
Heck, I'd like to know too :-)

Light came on it said theft sys

Your theft system is enabled. The car will only start and die if it will even start at all. More than likely it just turn over and wont start and this light is flashing you in the face. You need a new passlock sensor. It is located in the steering column and is part of the ignition switch lock cylinder. The lock cylinder must be replaced as a unit with the passlock sensor and match your existing key code so they will need the key...OR if you have a TOP NOTCH lock smith in town, take him your original key and they can program a small modual to match your key that plugs into the passlock sensor main wiring harness ( going to the computer and not the steering column ) at the base of the steering column to bypass the one in the ignition housing. I know they make them because I have put 4 in over the last 2 months. 2 pontiacs, 1 cadillac, and 1 chevy tahoe. It beats the heck out of tearing the steering column apart!

new tyres have nothing to do with warning light.if steering vague/wandering then poss new column required .I would ask a bmw specialist, if they have a diagnostic machine, to run a computer check, just to be safe,it dont cost much.....

Steering column loose and causes auto to stall and jump out of gear when steering wheel moves.

There are 3 tilt colum screws deep inside the colum, it's common for them to come loose and eventually cause wiring problems. special tools are required to thighten the torx head screws.

Used colums for that year are cheap however.

I'm trying to install a remote start on an 05 cobalt. The paper work I have says I'm looking for three small wires in the column harness for the passlock II system:yel-blk-wht. I'm not seeing any solid...

You do not have to take the whole colume appart. Just pull the colume covers off. Take the knee bolster off and then take the 3 7mm headed bolts out of the lower cover. It will unsnap from the top cover. The pig tail you are looking for sould be taped up to the wiring in that cover.
