If its overheated it could of blown the head gasket. or warped the head. take the plugs out and see if it looks like its been steam cleaned in one or more of the cylinders.

SOURCE: 92 cutlass ciera not starting

Sounds like it could be the fuel pump or injectors.

SOURCE: 1997 olds. auora overheating

feel of the top hose, if it's soft when the car is running and at operating temperature then it's probably air in the system, not allowing the pump to pick up the antifreeze. To get the air out let the car cool completely (like overnight) then fill the reservoir, leave the cap off and run the car until it comes up to normal operating temp. (watch to see you keep enough antifreeze so the tank doesn't go empty.
My 97 Aurora did the same thing and this fixed it.

SOURCE: coolant leak on 96 olds ciera 3.1

Head gasket. The reason for the cold then hot readings is the cooling system is getting gas bound by exhaust gases. A simple intake leak would just make you loose fluid, but wouldn't cause the other symptoms until the coolant was very low. Which leads me to, is the coolant full? The head gasket most of the time will not leak coolant into the oil, but instead coolant will go into the combustion chamber, and exhaust gasses will go into the coolant. You don't see any white smoke until the leak gets extreme. Then shortly after that the engine hydro locks from too much coolant in the combustion chamber. There is a tester that will test your coolant for CO gas. That is the proof of a head gasket leak.

How often should engine coolant be changed on a 1989 Olds Cutlass Ciera?

For most of the cars the Scheduled Maintenance Services has to be done at 30K, 60K and 90K. At the second Service at 60K dealers recomend the coolant system to be flushed. The inhibitors in the coolant starts breaking down, and the result might be a corroded radiator, heating core, and a partially clodgged heating core.
The transmission oil can't last for ever too. It starts breaking down at 30K and has to be changed at 60K.
It is a good idea to flush the braking system with fresh brake fluid too. The 60K service is expensive and it is a good idea to be done by yourself. It is not going to hurt your car if you change the rear differential oil too.

My car jerks before it cuts off because it keeps overheating. Already changed the thermostat and checked the radiator cap.

with the engine cold, remove radiator cap.fill w/antifreeze so you can see it.start engine.as engine warm up look for movement or flow of coolant.at normal temp,no flow--water pump bad. if you see bubbles it's a head gasket, quite likely if it was driven while overheated.

Car overheat frequently and at time the engine sound is very loud

Several things can cause this overheating. Have you recently done a:
1. Check Hoses for Leaks
2. Check Radiator for Leaks --- Also, Change Radiator Cap ( can loose pressure there if
cap is bad)
3. Check Water Pump for Leaks. If Water Pump is bad, you will hear a loud noise from it
4 Complete Tune Up? Should be done at least 1x a Yr. Depending on how much you drive the Vehicle. Includes: Plugs, Plug Wires, Gas Filter, Air Breather Filter, PCV Valve, Adjust Timing,
Check Belts -- see if worn
5. Changed your Thermostat & Gasket and have the correct degree Thermostat in the Vehicle?
6.. Had your Radiator Rod and Cleaned out?
7. Temperture Sending Unit (located near Thermostat) could be bad
8. 02-Sensor (Generally located in the Exhaust Manifold - needs a socket with a space in it
to allow the Socket to fit over this top wire of the 0-2 Sensor )
9. Change oil and oil Filter.
10. Change Gas Tank Cap ---

Do all this yearly ( except the Radiator Rod & Clean ( do every 2-3 yrs), and you should not have
any over-heating nor stalling out, etc. and should pass emissions as well.

The engine is over heating

are you loosing antifreeze and then overheating
these cars had intake gasket problems and would leak antifreeze into the intake and some times into the oil.
