1998 chevrolet k-1500 heater-core replacement

  • cdguy1 Nov 19, 2008

Leaking heater core, '91 Chevy Siverado. Is replacement as simple as removing firewall side hoses and dropping cover under dash to pull out core?
    Thanks

Remove the heater hose clamps and the hoses from the engine side of the firewall. From the inside under the dash on the pass. side, remove the lower panel screws and slowly pry the lower cover down and the heater core will slide out of the heater box. Installation is reverse of removal.

SOURCE: bad heater core

look undre the passenger side dash and you will see a black box. Look closely and you will see screws in it around the edges. remove all the screws then remove the cover, there is the heater core, held in by 1 screw that is kinda hard to see. next look under the hood on the passenger side firewall right in front of the dash, you will see 2 hoses with clamps on them. loosen the clamps and remove the hoses. you may want to drain the radiator first but I never do

SOURCE: How to replace a heater core in a 1994 chevy 1500

As with all vehicles it seems the first part that they build around is the heater core. It is under the dash above the floor housed in a black plastic sealed box. Sealed with goop. Locate that box and start removing everything around it that is peventing taking the cover off. Of course disconnect the heater hoses under the hood a thefirewall.

Warning it is never as easy as it sounds.

SOURCE: I notice that there is

it means there is an air pocket trapped in the heatercore, what you do first is start the truck and let it get up to normal running temp. , be sure to be very careful as the coolant is very hot, now you take the heater hose loose and just barely crack the hose so that just a little bit of coolant starts to drip out (as you are doing this turn the heat up as hot as it will go and wear protective gloves ) do this till the hoses get hot. and if you want before you do all this ,with engine cold and off, backflush the heatercore , to do this, disconnect both heater hoses from heatercore, and take fosit hose to heatercore and flushit out. be sure to keep coolant full after bleeding air out, can be a long prosses. so if your not sure about doing this take to a shop.

If i remember correctly you will have to remove the dashboard to get to the a/c box on these trucks. Then you need to disconnect the heater hoses and remove the a/c box. Then take the A/C box apart and replace the heater core.

How do i change the heater core on my 1999 chevy silverado 1500?

Inspect/Replace If it is necessary to remove the heater assembly, the cooling system must be drained before removing the heater core.
When a heater core leaks, a new heater core is installed or the old one repaired.
Heater Housing
  • The heater housing is usually under the dash and must be removed to gain access to the heater core.
  • Procedures for replacing the heater core vary with the year, make, and model of car. It threfore necessary to consult the manufacturer's repair manuals for the proper procedure for replacement.
f74-01.gif The heater housing is disassembled to get to the heater core. Heater Core
  • Remove the access panels(s) or the split heater/air conditioning case to gain acess to the heater core.
  • Remove the heater coolant hoses.
  • Remove the cable and/or vacuum control lines (if equipped).
  • Remove the heater core securing brackets and/or clamps.
  • Lift the core from the case. Do not use force. Take care not to damage the fins of the heater core when removing.
  • To reinstall the heater core, reverse the removal steps.
When the heater core leaks and must be repaired or replaced, it is a very difficult and time-consuming job primarily because of the core's location deep within the firewall of the car. For this reason always leak test a replacement heater core before installation.

The nipple on the heater core that connact the

Unfortunately the heater core must be replaced because the nipple is soldered to the heater core and access to the core for resoldering is not possible unless the heater core is remove and so if you go to that kind of trouble you should just replace the core with a new one rather than doing the repair and risking a future leak after reinstalling.
