SOURCE: 2003 f 350 starts then shuts down 2 or 3 times in

The first thing i would check is the Glow Plug Relay. Depending on your engine 7.3 i think you have, there should be (2 solenoids, or just one) sitting on the top front a little to the right of center. (right bank of engine that is) If you have 2 of them one should be smaller and it is the one furthest to the rear of the engine. It controls power to your glow plugs for cold start up. When you turn the key to the on position the 2 larger wires should both have power. When the ignition is off only one wire should have power. Check this if you do both these tests and only one wire has power with key on or off then you need to make sure that the key switch is sending power to the solenoid. Do this by checking the smaller wire with key off. It should not have power and then with key on it should have power. If this is good and test one is bad then the relay is bad. Note This is not true for the larger realy that sits furthest foward on the engine. The bigger one. This test will not work for it but it controls your intake heater. On another note: This is a timed circut and will "kick out" after about 1-2 minutes. In otherwords it does not stay on all the time that key switch is on it will for for about 1-2 minutes then shut off! Next would be your injectors are getting weak or bad and even your HPOP could be getting weak. or glow plugs in engine are out, In otherwords there are alot of possibilities causing your problems If you are getting a misfire code for your injectors then you may have some weak or inop injectors. Any way this will give you a pretty easy test for the most common failure which is the Glow plug relay. About 35-40 bucks at your local auto parts house.

How much injector oil pressure should I have with just starter spinning over no crank and pours white smoke out exhaust

Here's you some info from a ford manual.
you can use any scan tool that will rear ICP pressure and RPM. you need at least 100 RPM while cranking.

Check oil level and quality first. if its low, it may not start, if it's old it may aerate easily(mix with air easily)

If the smoke is white/gray and smells like raw diesel, you possibly have a stuck open/Leaking Injector, Leaking injector O-Ring Seal. A failed glow plug system, can make white smoke as I am unsure of the cranking temp. if it is Blue/White there may be a compression ring issue.

A note on 7.3L injectors!!!! ALL of the Injectors are the same EXCEPT #8 (Last one on the Driver's side) It is a "Cackle" Injector. It looks the same but is slightly different. It even has a different part number in our Ford Catalog.

I hope that helps you let me know if you need anymore info.

Tools Required:
New Generation Star (NGS) Tester 007-00500 or equivalent

9c. Monitor ICP While Cranking (min 500 psi @100 RPM)
Purpose:
To determine if the injection control system can supply enough injection control pressure to sustain starting.
much-injector-oil-pressure-just-starter-ccu5ej1tcfbj3pe04s4es3xr-4-0.gif

Recommended Procedure:
Install NGS Tester. Access ICP and IPR PIDs on NGS Tester, and monitor PID readings while cranking the engine.
Note: CMP signal is required before IPR is commanded above 14%.
If ICP does not meet the minimum specification of 3450 kPa (500 psi), the injectors will not be enabled by the PCM because of insufficient rail pressure.
If IPR goes above 14%, ICP pressure should easily go above 3.4 MPa (500 psi) provided that the oil reservoir is full, the IPR valve is not stuck open, the high pressure pump is building pressure and there is not an injection control pressure leak between the high pressure pump and all of the injectors.
Possible Causes:
  • Injection control pressure system leak
  • Oil reservoir level low
  • IPR failure (sticking open)
  • Faulty high pressure pump
  • Injector O-ring leaking

What are codes p1249 & p1211

P1211 Injector Control Pressure Sensor Above / Below Desired P1249 Wastegate Control Valve Performance
P1211 We all know that this code is commonly caused by "Hot Chips" that are demanding more Injection Control Pressure (ICP) than the High Pressure Oil Pump can deliver. For what it's worth, these are the exact parameters that trigger this code:
  • ICP 410psi Higher Than Desired for 7 Seconds
  • ICP 280psi Lower Than Desired for 7 Seconds
This code can also be caused by legitimate High Pressure Oil System issues. Below is a list of some of the causes:
  • Failed or Sticking IPR (Injection Pressure Regulator)
  • Failed or Weak HPOP (High Pressure Oil Pump)
  • Any Leak in High Pressure Oil System (o-ring, stuck injector, etc.)
  • Low Fuel Pressure (Rare)

P1249 it is the HPOP, above or below pressure, if you have added a performance chip to your vehicle , you will get this code from time to time, basically its Turbo over boost

High pressure oil pump leak.

the high pressure pump provides the pressure to your injectors so the diesel luel can be injected at high pressure. You should fix this immediately. Call your dealer and ask for some help from Ford on the repair cost ahead of the repair. See what they will do.

WHERE IS THE IPR LOCATED ON THE ENGINE ?

The "IPR" is and Injector Pressure Regulator. It is a Solenoid used to control the oil pressure created by the High Pressure Oil Pump. The IPR is capable of regulating oil pressure from 0 to 5000 psi. On an 05 6.0l the IPR is located in rear, top, center of the engine in the High pressure oil pump. It can be identified by its gold color. It sticks out of the side of the pump pointing toward the driver side of the truck. It has a 2 wire plug that is held on by a metal clip. usually the ipr and plug are protected in a heat shield so you may not be able to see it right away. Some people mistake and IPR for and ICP. The ICP is a sensor that tells the PCM what the High oil pressure is. ICP stands for Injector Control Pressure. This sensor is located in the passenger side valve cover on and 04, 05 6.0l and in the top of the High pressure oil pump on an 03 6.0l.

Ford F-350 Power stroke 6.0 L difficult to start

on both a 7.3l and 6.0l oil pressure is everything. Both engines use two oil pumps one for lubrication and one to fire the injectors. if your high pressure oil pump (inj pump) is weak it will take a long time for the truck to start. In order for the ficm to fire the injectors it wants to see at least 250 - 400 psi of ICP pressure. you will need a scanner to determine your high oil pressure at crank. Let me know how you make out.

2003 F-250 powerstroke

Could be one of many things:

-Clogged fuel filter
-Leaking fuel line
-Bad fuel pump
-High or low oil level
-Overdue oil change (Will explain both these possible causes later)
-Bad high pressure oil pump, ICP sensor (injection control pressure sensor), ICR (injection control pressure regulator), or bad HEUI injectors, or oil lines
-Leak in the high pressure oil system (unlikely because you would have noticed this... This does not go undetected as the underside of your vehicle would be literally covered in oil and dripping in a very short period of time after the leak develops)
(Powerstroke engines use a HEUI fuel injection system, "Hydraulically actuated/electronically controlled unit injection", which relies on a high pressure hydraulic pump that uses engine crankcase oil and pumps it at high pressure (500 psi or so). This oil is sent to your fuel injectors to provide means for actuating them and pressurizing the fuel into the cylinders. High or low engine oil level, or old, diluted, additive depleted oil will cause this system to aerate the oil and result in poor fuel injection capabilities)

There might be other causes but this is the Powerstroke`s weak point... The HEUI system was first designed by Caterpillar, which makes a lot of excellent/bulletproof HEUI based engines, both in passenger vehicle and heavy trucks and equipment. The Powerstroke is an engine designed and made by International Truck and Engine, which cannot seem to make a HEUI engine, in any market, whether passenger, heavy truck, or equipment that does not suffer from fuel injection issues.
