2000 jeep grand cherokee has sluggish idle sometimes doesnt stay started

You could possibly have a bad EGR valve which would affect the vacuum which affects the idle. Check for a vacuum leak first then check the egr valve

1994 cherokee jeep

It is on the driver's side of engine, mounted onto the intake manifold-right in the middle of the manifold, but on the side. It has a removeable metal tube on it coming from the exhaust manifold.

With the egr valve, there may be an attached "egr valve vacuum transducer"-a little device only there to increase or decrease the vacuum signal to egr valve, based on the amount of back-pressure in the exhaust. The transducer valve has a vacuum hose from the engine, a hose from transducer to the egr valve, then another hose from bottom of transducer valve to monitor exhaust backpressure. Do not worry about the transducer valve when servicing the egr valve.

I have a 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee 2.5 diesel. Starts, idles and drives along motorway all fine. But when I slow down and change to lower gears/revs, to go through town, etc, get black smoke from exhaust...

Soungs like egr valve is stuck open. Take it off and look inside small hole on the bottom. The pintle inside should be all the way closed. If not then replace the egr.

Intermittently won't hold idle and stalls

The symptom you describe can be caused by either a bad or dirty EGR vavle or a broken / defective vacuum line.

Try this
1. disconnect and plug off the EGR vacuum supply line

2. Connect a vacuum hose of equal size to the EGR valve.

3. Start vehicle

4. draw a vacuum on the line orally.

a. the engine should die or run really bad.

5. Restart vehicle and repeat checking for same result.

6. If EGR valve is performing correctly as stated in steps 4 and 5 thern you most likely have a bad / cracked / damaged vacuum line somewhere.

7. Reconnect original vacuum line to the EGR Valve

8. Locate source of Vacuum leak.

2005 jeep grand cherokee limited 5.7 hemi vehicles hesitates

The egr valve is located on the front of the right cylinder head. It has a tube attached to it and going to the intake manifold. It has failed and is why your jeep is running rough and hesitating. Replace it and it will fix your driveabllity issues. Disconnect the battery for 2 min to clear the code.
