2004 vw conv. right rear window regulator

I need to know how to steps required to remove the r. rear window regulator. The regulator motor works but when trying to raise the window it it would stop half way up then retract. I tried to lift the window to close it, but instead heard a noise like breaking plastic. The window fell down into the track. Also, where can I find replacement parts or a kit to repair the regulator once I've been able to access it w/o having to go to the dealer?

I took the rear seats out removed the seat belts, and speaker cabinet. I then removed the rubber trim on the body and removed nuts securing the actuatuator to the body. To remove the complete assy all electrical connectors must be removed and the window must be extended up fully ie., closed position. The assy pulled out after removing a top plate and some wrestling. I found the problem to be a small piece of plastic that is used to connect both ends of the cable assy. The tension of the cables flexed this piece enough to jam it on a support bracket. I went to the dealer and was told this part is not available, instead ----I must purchase the entire actuator at a cost of $564.00 (part only). I called the mfgr. and they were not at all helpful. Tthe extended warranty does not apply to my 2004 beetle convertible. I fabricated a part out of 3/8 aliminum and will see how it works tonight. This part should have never been fabricated out of plastic. Thanks for the feedback --I'll let you know how my fabricated aluminum piece works.

Exact same problem but when the plastic piece broke the cable was sucked into the motor and magled beyond recognition. The motor still works (i.e. turns) but the complete cable and pulley is shot all because of a piece of plastic. No more VW's for my wife that's for sure.

  • Anonymous Jan 06, 2009

Did you get the aluminum piece you fabricated to work? My window made a popping sound, then slid down. I can hear the motor, but can't get it up. No solution I can find without paying over $600 for part. Thanks so much!!!!

We bought the rear window regulator repair kit. Searched the internet for directions for removal. took it out did the repair. But forgot to hook up a small cable from the slideing door just next to the flip door. Guess what. When the top came up it broke and I am sick about it. If anybody needs more pictures you are welcome to email me [email protected]

If anybody needs directions with pictures email me. Now we broke the sliding door next to the flip door. But the window works just fine.

I'm becoming an expert on this same problem. (been at it for about a week) it,s best to work on it with the top down. the panel just pops off with a little prying. ther are 2 electrical connection to remove. one on the panel, blue colored, upper rear portion. the other is a large white gang, near the motor. the top will not operate un less thes wires are reconnected. there are four bolts that need to be removed on the window sill ( you,ll see them after removing the weather stripping). two more bolts are located and removed from the inside of the car one is way back to the rear by the hinge point of the top. Ive gotten the window and the plate out (seperatly) but it looks like the entire unit can come out the top (where the weather stripping was located) as one unit. I'm still looking for a cable routing diagram, so I can finish up. The repair kit is available from vw, part # 1Y089292 @77.00$

I took my car to the VW dealership, and found that they were actually cheaper than all the places I tried to by the kit, and I didn't have the stress about trying to do it myself. The newer models have this problem and they will cover them, for some reason they don't want to with a 2003.

Just finished this repair on my 2004 had to cut the cable to raise the window to get the mechinism out and then found it eaiser to route the cable around all of the guide wheels first then pull tenson on the motor until it slips onto place then insert and tighten the four screws that hold it in place. Then comnnected the power and ran the window up 3/4 to reinstall it. Don't forget to lube all the tracks before the reinstall. VW should have put a couple of panel clips in the kit for the ones that break when pulling the panel off. Kit was $76.50 at the Dealer.

I have the same problem....the passenger rear demonstrated the same indications. Warranty just ran out a couple months ago. The drivers rear actuator was replaced about a year ago. I've seen other information on the net (unverified) that there is a 7 year replacement on these window actuators and I'd like to find a way to confirm (documentation from VoA rather than just verbal from a dealer). An streaming tutorial is available at <http://www.bentleypublishers.com/images/video/bentleyPubs.vw.nb.convertible.training.rearSideWindowRemoval.wmv>. It's pretty good at showing and telling how to remove the rear actuator. Since my 4 year warranty is up and if there is a 7 year on the actuator, it would probably only apply to the clip and I'd rather see it before the dealer in order to eliminate the dealer BSing me with some other part failing and then it not being covered. It's interesting to note that VWoA says that the clips on the 03 are the upgraded ones and so they can only tell the 02 and earlier owners with certainty that the clip is covered. I wouldn't be surprized if this is also BS.

Rightside, rear window motor failed. or the mechanical part perhaps. what i want to know is how to get to that part of the car. The driver seat behind the panel. Thank you wery much! Patrik

Long job and not for the faint of heart.

Open roof to rear.

Pull up on rear seat bottom and remove it.

Remove center panel.

Remove three Allen head bolts down behind seat cushion back.

Lift off head rests...pull up.

Raise top just enough to make side flaps flip up.

Remove nut at top rear corner.

Remove Nylon/plastic push lock rivet where seat belt goes through panel... top corner.

Pull panel off mounting pins...will sound like your breaking it !

Lift panel to access seat belt bolt and unplug Flip-Up panel motor.

Remove cable from it's clip.

Remove loom thro' panel.

Pull seat belt thro panel.

Set panel to one side.

Remove Torxs bolts around black plastic panel for speaker.

Unplug speaker.

Pull loom thro' hole.

Remove two Allen and 5 hex bolts where window would come out. if it worked.

Pull up plate and remove rubber seal to one side and then remove plate. remove two nuts at bottom of regulator and one half way up towards front.

Lift regulator and window glass up thro' top to gain access to three nuts holding glass tho regulator.

Lift out window and then regulator....little maneuvering and levering required.

FYI....Take digital pictures as you remove stuff for later reference.

New regulator and glass is around $600.00 from dealership and only the dealership.

Right rear window will not go up 2005 VW bug convertible what is wrong?

Can you hear the motor whirring when the switch is activated? VW makes the bracket that holds the window out of plastic. You cannot buy a replacement bracket, so most likely the window regulator is broken and it needs to be replaced.

If you do not hear the motor, then the switch could be bad, or agin the regulator may need to be replaced. It's expensive to fix VW windows.
