I have 1996 Audi A4 2.8 FWD, just recently the speed-o-meter and rpm gauge stopped working, but all the other gauges on the instrument cluster are working just fine. I had this problem before that went away after my fuel assembly went out and i got it replaced. Also the previous owner said that pep-boys put the wrong battery in the car and fired some of the wires. Any ideas or should I just get rid of her before something major happens?
If the engine is running fine and no limp mode no engine lights. abs is working then the only other thing could be the dash may need replacing as putting the battery on wrong can blow the electronics in the dash as they are both linked. i ask is there any other problems as the rev counter work to ecu in line with speedo and the abs unit to determine timing etc. speedo works of the abs system the connection between them both is the board in the dash board. you can replace the boards in the dash but you will need replacement dash parts to do this but remember if you change the dash you need to log the miles as new dash will have different miles and uk mot log your miles to dvla. USA i dont know you would need to look into this.
SOURCE: Audi A4 instrument cluster does not work
Your dash has what is known in the trade as a dry solder joint in the instrument cluster it will have to be repaired by people whom specialise in this work.
You could try BBA remanufacture as they do a lot of this type of work for us.
SOURCE: Misreading outside temperature sensor on 2001 Audi A4
Ford has the same problem with their sensor, internally short out or come lose check to make sure it is plugged tightly, if it do a quick visual of the wires and make sure no nicks, cuts in the wire, if nothing can be seen to fix replace the sensor.
SOURCE: How can I take the dash cluster /screen out on my Audi A4
You must remove instrument cluster out of car. After that you can take the instrument cluster screen out.
For removing instrument cluster out of car you must remove left bottom plastic cover above pedals and upper plastic cover behind steering wheel, see picture below.
Refit all in reverse order.
SOURCE: Pulsar N13 instrument cluster no TRIP or OD
the common faults with most n13 pulsar dash clusters come from the rear circuitry where theey are all running to their respective gauges . heat and time finally get to the circuits and they let go causing a very small crack in the line causing no voltage to the gauge. easy to fix with a soldering iron and lots of patience .. good luck
SOURCE: i got a new battery for my audi a-4...now my radio
Yours radio has a burnt fuse in back right side of it (10A). You must extract the radio box out from dash panel in order to replace this burnt fuse. You need two special radio keys extracting tools. For Chorus and Concert AUDI radios use T10057 radio release tool:
1. Switch off all electrical equipment.
2. Remove ignition key.
3. Insert two radio release tools T10057 into slots on radio (bottom front side) until they engage.
4. Pointed ends of grips must face outwards.
5. Grasp hold of grips on radio release tool T10057 and pull radio out of dash panel.
6. Release and unplug electrical connectors at radio.
7. Press release tabs on radio and remove radio release tool T10057.
8. Replace the burnt fuse (10A) with new one.
9. Plug in all connectors.
10. Slide radio carefully into dash panel and engage it in mounting frame.
