The fuel gauge on my 1998 Dodge Ram will jump over to empty and make the low fuel light come on, then it quickly jumps back to its original position. It does this several times as I am driving. What is causing this?
It could be the fuel sending unit.
I just experienced this, it was my fuel pump going bad. In the older models, the rheostat on the fuel pump gets worn down, so the pump will read full until you've burned at least a quarter of a tank, then your fuel needle will jump back and forth between empty constantly. The only fix is to get a new fuel pump.
It might even be a sign of the fuel pump going out.
