Auto Trans I had to replace solenoid in transmission there are two of them when you drop the pan. After testing with a 12 volt battery one was bad replaced and transmission works fine. Mine was a 1996, cost about $90 for solenoid.
Auto transmission have a cluster of gears which could be considered clutches when the go bad usually first or reverse gears will be the first to quit working . The same for a stick
My 1992 geo metro lsi automatic won't shift 2nd and 3rd but would shift manually Thru the gears there on the left side of steering column up under the dash there is a little metal box two 10mm bolts holding it up there it is your (TCM) transmission control module take it out unplug wires pull cover off if circuit burnt or black spots around capsitors it burned its junk or u could test with ohm meter and try to replace them for all the capsitors on that board is 12.00 dollars at radio shack if u can find one I did
The transmission shifts both electrically and mechanically. The computer senses the shift points via throttle position with the secondary cable running from the topside of the transmission. But the mechanical linkage you'll notice while looking there is also supposed to not have any extra slack while in Drive {with the engine off}, refer to the Chilton or similar manual on the exact manner of setting the shifting mechanism.

He said it was an automatic transmission, exactly what kind of Master Mechanic thinks an automatic has a clutch?

transmission works sometimes but sometimes it will not down shift from drive nor will it kick in passing gear, sometimes it will work perfect when its acting up you can down shift manually this is a 1993 geo metro 1 lit engine.
Check the (TCM) I have a 1992geo metro lsi 2nd 3rd sometimes would shift and sometimes won't I could shift it manually and it would shift up under left side steering column under dash two 10mm bolt and unplug wires that cover off and look for burns spots or blacken spots that will give a good sign it needs to be replaced or repaired full name transmission control module
