Hello
The doors in this car are monitored for closure by a central module called the BCM, it senses the that the door is closed through a switch called the Door Ajar sensor, it is a tiny micro switch that is a twist in design that is attached to the door latch inside the door. There are 4 door ajar switches if you have a 4 door, one inside each door. Each door ajar switch takes about 1 hour to replace and then you are not sure you got the right one, the most common would be of course the drivers door switch. The switch is about $20.00. Your choice here is to have the Ford dealer scan electronically and see which door ajar switch is the one that is keeping the warning light on, or just start with removing the drivers door panel and replace that one 1st and hope that is it.

Here are the general instructions for removing a Focus door panel to access the door ajar switch.

A. Removing the Door Panel

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable before starting work

2. Roll the windows to approximately 1/2 open, and so the crank handle is in the Down

Position. With either the Crank Spring Removal Tool, or a flat Screwdriver, remove

the spring, located in a slot on the back of the crank.

3. Remove the cover plate for the remote-control mirror, which is held in place by 3

spring clips. Remove by gently pulling the front corner of the cover out, and then slide

the cover back.

4. Remove the door Pull-handle cover, by inserting a screwdriver into the access hole on

the bottom of the handle, and using the screwdriver as a lever, pop off the handle cover.

5. Remove the button covering a retaining screw in the interior door latch backing plate.

6. Remove the 8 Torx™ retaining screws around the perimeter of the door panel, and the

single Torx™ retaining screw in the interior door latch.

7. Remove the 2 hex bolts in the door handle.

8. Gently lift the panel upwards, to disengage the window weather-strip molding.

9. Remove the Door Latch Trim Panel, be sure to unplug the Power Lock Switch, and

remember how the wire was run.

10. Remove the interior door latch, by gently pulling out on the front corner, which is held

in by a plastic compression spring.

11. Remove the Foam Arm Rest bolster, by unclipping the 4 plastic compression clips and

the clip fasteners..

12. Remove the 4 Door Speaker screws, and disconnect the speaker.

13. Gently remove the closed cell Foam Cover from the doorframe, by pulling out, while

cutting the rubber cement around the cover. Remove all but the front edge of the cover.
This cover tears very easily, so use extreme care. The switch is located on the door latch inside the door, it just "twists" in and out. See picture below of the door ajar switch.

This is crazy old, but for Google's sake: you can isolate which switch is bad by entering the GEM switch diagnostic mode.
While holding the rear defrost button, turn on the ignition. Now any computer controlled switch will cause beep when you activate it. Open and close each door one at a time. The one that doesn't cause a beep is the bad one.

By the way, before taking the door apart like I did, make sure yours doesn't have the switch in the striker assembly mounted to the door jamb. 2 screws and a 5 minutes job. Part numbers 2M5Z-5422008-AA or 5S4Z-5422008-A

Hello and welcome to FixYa!
The rubber on the door that hits the door sensor can be worn out that's why it beeps even when the door is shut. You may want to add a little padding to the door rubber for it to press the door sensor when the door is closed.
Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa! Have a good one!

As for the dorr ajar light there is most likely a sticking door ajar switch on one or more of any of the doors. There is a switch mounted to the latch inside each door. Sometimes shooting wd40 into the latches will free up the switches. Keep in mind that the trunk lid is on the same circuit.

If this wont work, another most common cause of the problem you are having is most likely with the GEM, in follow lines we send test procedures in order to determine the exact cause.

PINPOINT TEST J: THE DOOR AJAR INDICATOR IS INOPERATIVE (CHIME IS OPERATIVE)/DOES NOT OPERATE CORRECTLY

CAUTION: Use the correct probe adapter(s) when making measurements. Failure to use the correct probe adapter(s) may damage the connector.

J1 CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE INTERIOR LIGHTING
Check the operation of the interior lighting system while opening and closing the doors.

Does the interior lighting operate correctly?
Yes - GO to J2.

No - REFER to Section 417-02

J2 CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE DOOR AJAR INDICATOR
Ignition OFF.
Connect the scan tool.
Ignition ON.
Enter the following diagnostic mode on the scan tool: Generic Electronic Module (GEM) Active Command.
Select the GEM warning lamps active command and trigger the door ajar indicator lamp on and off.
Monitor the door ajar indicator lamp.

Does the door ajar indicator turn on when commanded on and turn off when commanded off?
Yes - GO to J6.

No - GO to J3.

J3 CHECK THE INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION
Ignition OFF.
Disconnect: GEM C201e.
Connect a fused (5A) jumper wire between the GEM C201e pin 19, circuit 31S-AA7 (BK/BU), harness side and ground.

Yes - GO to J6.

No - GO to J4.

Monitor the door ajar indicator with the jumper wire connected and with the jumper wire disconnected.
Does the door ajar warning indicator turn on with the jumper wire connected and turn off with the jumper wire disconnected?

Yes - GO to J6.

No - GO to J4.

J4 CHECK CIRCUIT 31S-AA7 (BK/BU) FOR AN OPEN OR SHORT TO GROUND
Ignition OFF.
Disconnect: Instrument Cluster C220a or C2220 (2.3L only).
Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster C220a pin 24 or C2220 pin 25 (2.3L only), circuit 31S-AA7 (BK/BU), harness side and the GEM C201e pin 19, circuit 31S-AA7 (BK/BU), harness side; and between the instrument cluster C220a pin 24 or C2220 pin 25 (2.3L only), circuit 31S-AA7 (BK/BU), harness side and ground.

Yes - GO to J5.

No - REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.

<2004 ford focus door ajar light stays on and it - zjlimited_1926.jpgimages/zjlimited_1926.jpg" alt="zjlimited_1926.jpg" class="h_mi" />

Is the resistance less than 5 ohms between the instrument cluster and the GEM; and greater than 10,000 ohms between the instrument cluster and ground?

Yes - GO to J5.

J5 CHECK CIRCUIT 31S-AA7 (BK/BU) FOR SHORT TO POWER
Ignition ON.
Measure the voltage between the instrument cluster C220a pin 24 or C2220 pin 25 (2.3L only), circuit 31S-AA7 (BK/BU), harness side and ground.

Yes - REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.

No - GO to J7.

zjlimited_1927.jpg

Is any voltage present?
Yes - REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.

No - GO to J7.

J6 CHECK FOR CORRECT GEM OPERATION
Disconnect all GEM connectors.
Check for:
corrosion
pushed-out pins
Connect all GEM connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.

Is the concern still present?
Yes - INSTALL a new GEM. TEST the system for normal operation.

No - The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.

J7 CHECK FOR CORRECT INSTRUMENT CLUSTER OPERATION
Disconnect all instrument cluster connectors.
Check for:
corrosion
pushed-out pins
Connect all instrument cluster connectors and make sure they seat correctly.
Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.

Is the concern still present?
Yes - INSTALL a new instrument cluster. TEST the system for normal operation.

No - The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. TEST the system for normal operation.

Just in case necessary, the GEM is a replaceable module, prior to removal of the GEM, it is necessary to upload module configuration information to a diagnostic tool. This information needs to be downloaded into the new module once installed. Once the module is installed, it is necessary to download the module configuration information from the diagnostic tool into the new module.

Hope helps, keep us updated.

Spray some wd 40 on the door latch...something is probably stuck.
most likely its the drivers door (most used).
The trunk lid is on the same circuit. In most of this problems, spraying good amount of wd-40 helps. The switch, sensors gets dirty and wd-40 cleans the dirt/rust collected on this sensors/ latches and this helps.------ This will help.Thanks.Helpmech.

Then in that case the door latch on any of the door is causing the problem. You need to buy pass door latch on each side one by one.And see.If the beeping stops by that one door latch then other 3 door latches are ok and one door latch which is causing the beep has to be replaced.-----
Only by pass one door latch switch at one time.-------
    This will help.Thanks.Helpmech.

Is the door ajar and door light switch the same

Im pretty sure they are. Check all your door switches to see if one is stuck or if the button or rubber cover has popped off. The switch may think that the door is still open.

Door ajar light and buzzer stays on when I'm driving my 2006 ford focus

This problem is caused by one of the door ajar sensing switches being defective, it is a common fault in Many Ford cars and light trucks. Each door has a switch and two at the tail gate door. The switches are attached to the side of the door latch and very hard to replace, since you would most likely have to detrim at least two doors to find the bad switch the most prudent thing to do is have the dealer scan the door ajar waring system, the scan will indicate exactly which switch has the problem.

Try spraying WD-40 into the door latching mechanism (door side). I learned this fix after two battery replacements, but have only had to spray twice in the more than seven years of ownership
