97 honda accord car will not go in reverse. When put in reverse the transmission makes a loud whinning up sound. The car goes in all other gears but shifts hard and rpms go up over 4-5000 when shifting. Time for a new ******?

Definitely not good. The transmission is slipping internally due to worn gears and clutch packs. It will have to come out for rebuilding, IMO. Have a transmission shop check it out.

This is to tell you, that your transmission is start to compromised. Prolonged this situation will completely damage your transmission / gear box. just have it fixed soon, at car repair shop.
IT sounds like your reverse gear is going out, or that you need to have filter replaced my best advise is have your transmission checked out by a transmission shop as soon as possible.
an automatic transmission for your car has clutch packs that help it go into gears they can go out and cause this exact problem purchase a new clutch pack or used if you like and replace it make sure its the reverse clutch pack they are located on the front of your transmission. heres a place you might try for a used one: Peach street auto 18003651341 or try the dealer! but be advised it may be the actual gears then you will need a new transmission or used one Peach street should be able to get one to you cheap! with rebuilding its usually cheaper or the same price for a used one.
If you have not had the transmission fluid changed/flushed that could be the problem. Alot of Honda dealerships are offering good rates on this type stuff but if you have someone else do it, make sure that it a honda recommended/compatable fluid. I had our Oddyssey transmission serviced at local honda place for only about $20 more than I could have done it. Very worth $20.
