2002 outback engine problem

My 2002 subaru outback
has 55,000 miles and several days a week starts spitting and sputtering for no apparent reason have tried different grades of gas and also have added dry gas. and at times will stall out. at one point check engine light came on. and scanner read code P-172 which means cylinder failure. Can you help?

I have 2002 Subaru Legacy L, that keeps sputtering when light pressure is maintained on the accelerator pedal.

I have 160,000 miles on it and just had the head gasket replaced. The sputtering only started after having this job done. Most noticeable when maintaining light pressure on the accelerator pedal. The car just suddenly starts sputtering.

The dealer cannot find the problem, as the check engine light does not come on. They have hooked it up to the computer and get no error code readings.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks

2005 Subaru Outback. Trip odometer suddenly said Err 55, cruise control started flashing, ABS lit up, and check engine light had come on. I noticed a day later that the regular odometer had frozen,

I found this under Fixya; 2006 Subaru Outback; there were 25 answers: The problem is not with an emission issue as you would expect with a check engine light. The ER 55 code on the odometer means that there is a loss of communication with the ECU, that is why the check engine light is on and cruise light flashing. for what ever reason whenever your check engine light comes on the cruise becomes disabled. Lame I know. I work in the service department and have seen this issue a lot. The only real way to fix this issue is to go the dealer and have them do a reflash for your vehicle. If the ECU is bad it is covered under the federal emmission wrty for 8 years or 80,000 miles

Hesitation on Startup. Battery & Alternator are good. Fuel related? Spark plugs?

If you are saying it takes a long time to start the engine, have you checked fuel pressure before and after cranking ?

2000 Subaru Outback Wagon (100K miles) with P0420 Code

I do not know for sure if this is the problem you are having, But, I have noticed that from 95 up to 2002 I have seen a lot of PO420 codes that have been just the sensor. I do not know if it was a weak sensor or just that program telling it that it is below threshold. I did notice that if the vehicles are run for a long trip at highway speed it goes out. I wish you luck and have a great day.

2003 outback, check engine light is on, car feels like it's misfiring (sputtering) vehicle has 70k miles

any bad fuel in your area, low petrol recently,,may need to get dealer or good mechanic to pull fault codes from computer, not expensive to do,but repair depends on fault, need to look further, any car situation changes recently that may explain it,may be simple like spark plug lead

Low gas mileage on Subaru Outback 2003

Sometimes a bad engine temp sensor (not the coolant gauge sender) will cause the ECU to stay in 'choke' mode.

2005 Outback Wagon Code P0420

PO420 is for catalyst system efficiency below threshold. I have seen this many times on vehicles from 96 up. It is due to the system not burning the fuel at what it considers an acceptable rate. Todays fuels are not the best we could have for internal combustion and sometimes it will set off the light. I tell my wife she is too easy on the car and it's not burning the fuel proper. After a couple days it goes out. It will not harm your engine and should go out again. Fuel system cleaning additive will also turn of light. Good luck and enjoy your Subbie. Greatest car ever Built.
