A growling (humming) sound from the front wheels area starts around 20 km speed and gets a little bit louder as speed increases.
However, at higher speed (90+ km) it sounds less loud!
When a car is going straight or turning left , this noise is there, however while turning right this noise completely disappear.
There is no any kind of vibration, shaking, pulling on the steering wheel.
Thought maybe it is coming from old, worn, unbalanced tires.... after replaced tires with brand new ones, the noise is still there !
Please let me know possible cause, is it possible to do a DIY repair, if not, how expensive would be at the service.
Thanks!
You have a bad front wheel bearing on the left side because you say when you turn right the noise goes away, because when you turn right the suspension lifts up on the opposite side and releives some weight on the bearing causing it to quiet down. No it is NOT a DIY repair unless you have some pretty extensive tools. the quickest easiest and least expensive way to fix this is to go to a wrecking yard and buy a steering knuckle for the left. it will have a wheel bearing already pressed into it and all you have to do is replace the whole thing and you are done. do not open any brake lines or hoses to do this job just gently press the brake caliper piston back about 1/2" so it will fit over the brake pads when you reinstall.
please rate this advice a fixya if you feel I have provided excellent service.
email me with any feedback at [email protected] Thanks,Randy
LEFT BECAUSE WHEN YOU TURN RIGHT YOU CAUSE THE SUSPENSION TO LIFT ON THE OPPOSITE SIDE ,REPLACE THE LEFT STEERING KNUCKLE ITS MUCH CHEAPER AND EASIER THAN THE WHEEL BEARING BUY THE PART FROM A WRECKING YARD. NO PROBLEM
I have to amend a mistake I made I told you the left wheel bearing I misspoke its the right one that is making the noise I so do appologize I was wrong I made a mistake please forgive me so its the right one that is bad and when you turn right it unloads the right wheel bearing.
well as far as cause additional damage it can sieze up due to heat and cause a very dangerous situation you can loose control of the car .
The bearing could sieze at any time without warning you are receiving the warning now in the form of the growling
I would repair it as soon as it is possible to do it if it seizes up you may have to tow the vehicle thats an additional cost
If it seizes up and an accident happens well then..............
Good luck thanks for the question

You have a worn right front wheel bearing - all your symptoms are classic signs of wheel bearing failure. You'll likely need a 6-8 ton shop press to replace it. Dropping your car off for the work and picking it up completed can run you $250-300, but many places will charge only $30 or so if you remove the spindle (which houses the bearing) and bring it to them, so they only have to press out the bearing and install the new one.

Sounds like there is two vote for the front wheel bearing ...but is it a RIGHT or LEFT ?
Anybody else ?
Thank you for all the info, now I need to decide which way to go.
However, meanwhile I a need to drive this car, I do not drive it on the highway, just in the city with 50-60 km speed.
I would like to know if driving in this condition:
1)Would cause damage to other parts, so more parts would need to be replaced?
2)How long can I drive car in this condition?
3)Would the bearing eventually completely seize up?
Thanks!
Thanks for all the info, I need to think about what to do
Meanwhile I keep driving the car as it is (bothersome noise), but only at low speed in the city.
1)Would this cause damage to additional part so repair would cost more?
2)How long before something catastrophic happens to the bearing?
3)Would it seize up or fall a part ?
Thanks!
Thank you for all the info.
To make the final diagnosis, I raised the right-front of the car, turned tires by hand, shaked it by holding at 12/6 o'clock position then started engine and run it in different gears and speed, so I was able to listen closely the noise.
I did not detect any loosenes, but when it was running, there was some serious grinding going on there, and I agree, that it needs to be fixed immediately.
Already booked the earliest appointment to a local Hyundai service, the estimated cost to change the bearing is $247+tax.It looks like 2 hrs labour + cost of bearing ($70-80).
Hopefully, the hub is still good, otherwise this repair would get more expensive.
Thank again for all the replies !
I believe my daughter's 2003 Elantra is displaying the same problem. Awful noise that only goes away when you turn, even slightly, to the right or when you stop.
What solutions have been proposed?
Regards!
my 2007 jeep compass is making a rattling noise around the tire area and then when i turn either way and try to pick up speed again it sounds like my tire is dragging trying to catch up.
right front inside tires rearing out and car shaking car
