Have the fault codes read to confirm the mechanics diagnosis
I am suspicious that the car runs hot, looses coolant but the mechanic did not do a compression test to check for head gasket/ cracked head problems
From you statement ,I am thinking that the car has overheated , and blown a head gasket at no 5 cylinder

Make sure you have gotten all the air out of the system by running the car with the cap off for a bit.. also make sure the radiator overflow if at proper level.. next look at your radiator and see if it is plugged up with trash bugs what ever this will slow your cooling big time.. also look between your radiator and your air condition condensor and make sure its clean also there can be trash in there causing it to heat .. also check belts make sure they are tight.. really sounds like you started with air in system and system might be air locked needing to run a bit with cap off when cool. dont take cap off when hot ... make sure over flow is full also... thanks and holler if you need more. to all...it may be a switch problem. if it was the wiper motor, common sense says you wouldn't have any wipers at all. also have someone go over the wiper relay in your vehicles.
SOURCE: engine does not appear to be hot. Gauge says extreme heat
try replacing your temperature sending switch. That it what tells your gauge or idiot light where to read or light to come on. It may have a short in it. Or a short between the two.

It sounds like the coolant level is getting very low. Only check it when it is cold! Check the level in the radiator and in the overflow bottle. Chances are you have a leak somewhere, these vans had problems with intake manifold gaskets. A big job.

Have your water pump looked at. i had the same problem and had my water pump looked at and it was bad. So getthat checked out before you replace your t-stat. I just had me water pump replaced and everything is working fine now.
