possibly a universal joint or (carrier bearing /if you have a 2 piece drive shaft) if thats not it, then rearend may need gear oil. reason you get that when you takefoot off gas, it allows slack, adn takes off the force to the jouint or rearend, then when you push the gas down again the pressures back on therefore adding tension
I recommend an inspection of all universal joints or CV(constant volocity) joints, whichever apply on the vehicle! A quick inspection of the rear suspension at the same time should reveal the source of the unusual noises that you describe.
A reputable service shop will do the inspection for free or for a minimal fee.
Have a great day!
Check rear-end fluid level and play in rear pinion gear.
Check universal joints for play. If play is in pinion gear change rear end fluid and add a full bottle of LUCAS oil stabilizer, will quiet rear end noise.
You cannot check universal joints with the driveshaft under tension. Trans needs to be in neutral (wheels blocked or on jackstands) If diff is noisy, check gears by removing cover and checking lube for metal debris, gears for "sharpening" on edges. Generally it is cheaper to replace unit with one from a scrapyard. Any work regarding bearings or gears requires precise depth and lash adjustment or the unit will quickly fail again. Universal joint failure will cause a "clunk" when engaging reverse or drive and also can cause vibration similar to out of balance tires. Worst case is a rhythmic squeak while going about 10-20mph.
First of all you need to be more specific-- Is this a car, truck,or whatever. Is it front wheel drive? Is it four wheel drive? (Sounds like a four wheel drive) Basically we need to know exactly what type of vehicle you have. As far as the noise you hear, it could be any number of things-- such as bearings. cv joints, universal joints, and so on. Once we know what vehicle you have It will definately help us narrow down the problem. Ed
Sounds more like a universal joint. Should be a inexpensive fix have it checked soon or you will need to add the price of a tow to the repair bill. part should not be over $30 each x 2 labor should not be much more than an hour.
