1998 dodge 1500 ****** will not shift out. i drove 150 mile yesterday and it was working fine, but when i was almost home i stopped at a red light and went to ressume acceleration and it wouldn't get above 30mph. i pulled over checked the trans fluid and it was about 1 quart low so i added and checked again, then drove it up the rode and it was running fine again. i awoke this morning and headed to work and it began doing it again so i checked the trans fluid and it was at the normal level, and now the only way i can get it to shift is to drop it into 1st manually, the bumb it into 2nd, and finally into over drive and i have to do this everytime i stop at a light or anything just to get it to shift out.

Sounds like you blew out your reverse belt/gear in the transmission. Probably going to need a transmission rebuild/replacement.

Make sure the trans cooler is getting a good air flow. and a trans flush is always good, and most oil change shops do it for around $89+

Power Steering Belt is the first thing that comes to mind.
Check fluid levels as well.

go t auto zone and have them run a diagnostic for free when the light is on , that will tell you the problem easy , or you can buy an OBD scanner,

should not have been steaming after that check out the temp sensor could have roasted it (make sure you disconect the battery befor doing anything electrical

I have a 1998 Dodge Ram 1500 with the 5.9 liter in it, i couldnt keep it running when i stopped at stop signs, the two things i tried, was taking off the air cleaner and sprayed carb cleaner into the intake manifold with the engine running, using the carb cleaner and the throttle linkage to keep it running, before i did this i noticed the throttle valves were dirty, so I inspected the air filter housing and saw it was cracked in multiple places. The second thing i did was reset the computer using a scanner then took my truck out on the highway and drove at least 50 MPH for at least a mile which re-learned the computer. I hope this helps you, it sure worked for me.

see my comments, not 100% sure that it was the out put speed censor or not, but after reconnecting the wires to a new censor and reconnecting the battery and clearing codes it worked. connection was not clipped may have been loose
