I experienced a sudden power loss while driving. My speed drops drastically going uphill. Since the loss of power i am now also hearing a rattling inside the muffler as if there is something inside. I've changed the fuel filter, plugs and plug wires. The new plugs and wires improved things slightly. Could the muffler be responsible for power loss??
Did u check the catalyst is it loose inside..see how much back pressure from the exhaust u r getting
No engine stated. (size) or cyl.counts. (6 engines options in 92)
the car had a CAT converter.
if the CAT breaks up , as many do.
it can go to chucks, and plug up a muffer.
the CAT can melt too and block the exhaust, flow. too.
the noise i can answer as you didnt look first.
always look first. and then if damage (holes and cracks)
are not seen shake or hit the cat and muffler gently
rattle ?
the front of the cat, has a pipe, that goes to the exhaust manifold headed end.
if this is cracked, it sucks in air, and this ******* air source
will cause the front 02 sensors, to go nuts,(causing huge fuel consumption, black spark tips and gross misfiring and power loss.
so that is a few ways to get power loss.
as are , low fuel pressure (use a gauge)
(check fuses) yet
is cluster lamp CEL glowing key on?
then turns off running, if not scan it? (ask)
IF the CEL glows key on, this means gross sensor errors.
gross like in (they fell off or are DEAD 100%)
if it was my car id find the noise first fix that an move on
as they say, "why not fix what you know is wrong first"
my shop mate loved to say that. ASE.
or ,? you never said it still runs....
assumed, does
so check cat back pressure, using a tool called a gauge.
or the classic vacuum test in all ASE books,. for same.
do the jumper clip tests?
DLC? port left leg (LHD cars)
google finds this is 1second
get the flash codes.
The Assembly Line Diagnostic Link (ALDL) connector or Data Link Connector (DLC) may be located under the dash and sometimes covered with a plastic cover labeled DIAGNOSTIC CONNECTOR.

the reason the connector is different is that there were 6engine.
not one stated by you, and makes helping near
impossible,... after all its an ENGINE POST.

I have changed the spark plugs and wire. I also had to change the valve cover gasket. the truck(1998 rodeo) just doesn't accelerate. It seems bogged down like one of the four cylinders isn't firing.
