First time it happened i started car and it went a few feet - i heard a pop and it stopped and just kept cranking - wouldn't turn over - i towed to mechanic and he replaced ignition and coil. i drove for several miles and next time tried and still kept cranking - towed 2nd time and they did full tune up includ, wires, plugs, ignit. rotor, ign wires, dist. cap and cleaner fluid lube. it drove next day 50 miles and fine. following day drove 4 miles and it just conked out in the middle of road and cranked over. waited 15 mins and started and drove another 5 miles and conked out. waited again for several mins and started. drove another 5 miles and conked out. called AAA -waited 1 hour and he started it when he arrived and towed it. i aked my mechanic if it could be a fuel filter or fuel pump since neither have been changed and car has 129k miles. he said he didn't think so - i am going crazy and afraid now to break down again my mechanic also said that he has a diagnostic code reader because my nephew thought it could be a computer code error and my mechanic seemed to be annoyed that i would question that. does fuel filter and fuel pump have to be replaced at a certain mileage? please help -thank you
You do not have to replace the fuel pump at a specific mileage.
I hate to speculate without physically inspecting the vehicle, but, my best solution here & now may be the fuel pump. Now, I would not go out & buy one before you had proper diagnosis. Here is one test, but you will need to have to experience the stall again, and then test to see if you have fuel pressure at the injectors. If you have no fuel pressure, replace the pump. Fuel filter issues do not "come & go", they stay, and your car would not run properly. Also, a fuel pump failure will not set a computer code on this particular model vehicle. Hope this helps..
thanks toyota ed,
*** You are quite welcome!!!!***
that was so fast. to clarify wouldn't it be also simple to change fuel filter - is there one on this car?
*** Yes, there is, on the driver side of the engien compartment; low on the firewall***
also the mechanic was going to run the car at his shop - is that as effective as driving it -
*** I would do the exact same thing***
and then he said when it had the problem again he would see - so hopefully that is what he will do. that's helpful to know about the computer codes. also, i am due for timing belt/chain - every 60k they say to change -
*** def replace the belt every 60K miles***
also should i go ahead and replace the water pump since people say that there is so much labor to do the timing belt/chain that you should just to the water pump as well..
*** That is correct. Change the pump when you have the belt off. It is just several more bolts. Put in new coolant, also.***
also i have been having an oil leak for some time - i need to add a quart between oil changes of 3500 miles. any thoughts on that
***oil pump seals (behind the crank pulley) are common leaks, the usual suspects (valve cover/distributor o-ring, oil pan, etc should also be checked.***
.- my guys said that when they do the timing belt there are some oil plugs or something that they can go ahead and change.
***Oil plugs? Never heard of that with a timing belt replacement***
other than this present problem the camry has been a good car - people say you can put about 200k miles on them -is that true?
***Correct...My 93 Camry work car has 223,437 miles on it as of today.***
i should however be on the lookout for a new car anyway - do you think the toyota or honda's are more reliable?
*** TOYOTAS, of course!!!!!! Our current mileage champion has 351,000 miles on his 91 V-6 Truck, still has original rings, rods & mains in it.***
THANKS
THANKS again!
Post your e-mail, and I will contact you. For obv reasons, I cannot give my e-mail out, as I would get inundated with too much for me to handle, and still keep my job. BUT, in answer to your question, I have a passion for Customer Satisfaction, and I was the number one Cust Satisfaction dealership in USA (with Nissan) in 1992, and the number one Cust Satisfaction dealership in USA in 2000 & 2001, with Toyota. ...I have so many CSI plaques on my wall that I no longer have room for them...
So, when it comes to "ME ME ME"; I look at it like this: Nobody helped me when I did not know much about cars, 38 years ago, and, when I found FixYA, I figured that this was the perfect vehicle for me to help even more people. I like to help people, all I ask is a good rating. "FixYa"s are real nice...Unfortunatly, there are a few peeps here that think that they know it all, and sometimes are harsh to the posters. Not me. When someone asks for my help, they get the best possible answer, or I will simply not post. I have the entire Toyota database at my finger tips, and I have not observed many other responders that have the tools that I have at hand, or anything that matches my experience level & desire to help. Regarding a "good site" for cars, personally, I tend to gravitate away from "sites". Really, there is not much better than going to a reputable new car dealership and check out the used car lot. Look at it like this: The used cars on MY lot have been gone over, and have no issues. If they do, *** I *** take the flak for it, and I do not need dis-satisfied customers. No dealer wants dis-satisfied customers. In any case, a dealership with a good reputation ususally has good used cars on the lot, ESPECIALLY when the USED cars are the SAME at their NEW cars. Nobody knows used cars better than the dealership that sells new of the same manufacturer. In short, why buy a used Toyota from a Ford dealer? Ford dealers are good peeps, but they do NOT know about everything Toyota. They know Ford, and are EXPECTED to know Ford. Thanks again.
Payment?
In actuality, I have not earned one cent form FixYa.
Guess I do it for "free"... But, It's all good.
"I" am not a new car dealer...Nor would I ever want to be... :-) Too much hassle for me...
However, I am perfectly happy to be the Service & Customer Relations Manager at a Toyota dealership...In Pennsylvania. Guess I am not far from you.
I'll talk to the Toyota DSM who handles your area, I'll get you a reputable dealer. he is a very good friend of mine.
Wish you the best; keep me posted of how your final repair turns out.
Ed, I have not gone to a Toyota Dealer for this problem because they are far from me and I was stuck close to home, but do you think that I should get the timing belt done at a dealer even though they are probably double the cost? Can a regular mechanic do a good job on something intricate like that?
Any "good" mechanic can do it, the belt replacement is not a difficult job, but, it IS time consuming.
And thanks for referring me to a reputable dealer - the ones I know of are Monmouth Toyota, Gateway Toyota and when I called the 800 # they gave me Lakewood Toyota I believe. So I should have guessed that you are the Service Manager and kudos on all of your awards..
Your are welcome. My DSM is researching those 3 dealers & I will get back to you with the best one.
I am sure that you earned them..Oh, and is there anything else, other than oil changes, etc. that have to be addressed with the 1995 like the timing belt that is essential to have replaced every so many miles?
You should be considering replacing the spark plugs, wires, cap & rotor; consider having a transmission flush, consider having a cooling system flush. Other than that, keep the oil changed and the air filter replaced when dirty.
Guess I should read the service manual but I can't locate it..
Regards,
Toyota Ed

I had a radiator replaced, water pump, thermostat, and a head gasket. The car was starting before the water pump was put back on, but now it will not start, it will just keep turning over, but won't catch. Do i need my timing set back, or do I need a new motor. Please help me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
I need a solution for my 1992 Toyota Camry. It was running good and I put $10 in gas in it and I drove maybe 2 minutes and it like jumped, not to where it jerked me but, then it just went out. I replaced the fuel filter and I put a part on that consists of the timing. I put the timing part on first. When it died out it would not even attempt to start. Well when I put the timing piece on, it had two parts to it that went together, it starts up but you have to keep your foot on the gas or it will go dead again. And the battery is good. Is the timing to low? what would be your opinion? I have been trying to fix this for the past 3 weeks now. And a mechanic put on the timing piece. Obviously he didn't do it right or it's somthing else. Please if you have an idea please state it.
It
can be low fuel pressure issue or clogged fuel pump. Or its engine related
issues,---------------

Thanks again Ed, obviously you are a mechanic and know everything about cars. How do I reach you if I have other problems and why are you being so nice in this day and age of '"ME, ME, ME" and self-centeredness. Hopefully this company pays you - this is my first time and my nephew in Oregona turned me onto the Toyota Forum site and you don't know how much this has helped me - i feel alot more knowledgeable and confident that this problem can be resolved and I don't have to worry about breaking down again - my business is real estate and I rely on my car for my livelihood. What is a good site to go to see car values if I want to buy a good used car - say 3 years old or so and also is Kelly's blue book to site to see how much my car is worth if i want to sell. I found a new friend in you..hope I can return the favor. Also not to take so much of your time is the FixYa site different and better than the Toyota Forum site-i found FixYa thru Toyota Forum so someone looking for a different style car would go to Honda Forum or directly to FixYa?
Hi Ed, So you are a car dealer, eh? I always feel sooo intimidated when I go to a dealer and I haven't bought a brand new car if you can believe it - this one I took over from a lease (3 years old) that a friend had and I have enjoyed it...and I did live in NYC for 10 years and didn't have need for a car - I worked for American Airlines and flew everywhere and I would never drive in the "Big Apple"..so in the past 20 years I have only owned about 4 cars and I do think I will stay with a Toyota because I think they are great cars..do you know a good Toyota dealer in Monmouth/Ocean County, NJ? You are my "NEW CAR ANGEL"..and especially since my mechanics haven't called me yet today..thanks and have a wonderful day..i will keep you posted and I am really grateful for your expert advice and immediate attention. Thank God that my girlfriend's friend is lending me her 2001 Buick Century and it's very nice-choosing a car is sooo difficult because there are too many choices-how many models and types of cars are there? And, by the way, which State do you "hail from",,Most probably the MidWest..you are too nice and friendly..not used to that where I live. Bye for now and I will certainly let you know how this saga unfolds.

I scanned it and it coded P0351 ign coil and O0108 map sensor wiggled wires and it staterd ck engine light went out rescan said no codes found drove 2 miles and lost power again. What could it be?coil, fuel pump, fuel filter?
Majesty stalled at low speed and would not restart--had to be towed. Started fine the next day. This happened twice before but only after shutoff; it wouldn't restart for a while. Fuel pump? ECU? Less than 10,000 miles.
the clutch pedel in my 91 toyota mr2 has frozen stiff and i am unable to start the car. it worked fine one day and the next day i went to push in the clutch and it was frozen stiff, i then pushed again and heard a weird noise come from the pedel area and then it would not move up or down just stuck and frozen stiff. i am the only owner and this has never happened before. the car only is driven about 10 miles a month. thank you for your help!
