I drive an 02 Nissan Altima 163,000 miles. On Sunday i replaced the camshaft sensor on my Nissan and topped off the antifreeze in the clear container, i put some wetter wet into my radiator line and shut the hoood. Car started great Monday. Tuesday I was driving to work and it starts to over heat. I pull over and let it cool down but get back on the road. another 3 miles and it hits the very top notch of the temp guage and the check engine light goes on. it feels like a ton of bricks hit my car. it jerked back and felt..heavy..? So i got off the road and popped the hood. the radiator cap was off (oh ****, did i not put it back on?? had alll the antifreeze evaporated??) There was white smoke, or steam (???) it was dark. It smelled like maple syrup, sweet and sugary, was that from the wetter wet??? I poored some water into the radiator and the antifreeze and tried driving it around the parking lot. It was jerking BAD. the rpms were dancing. i mean just all over the place. it felt like a roller coaster going up the tracks. Finally my step dad picked me up and said to wait till after work. I got some antifreeze after work and filled it up, the radiator line and the anti freeze resovior (the plastic one). It drove fine but the check engine light was on. So i brought it to autozone, their code sadi it was camshaft (WTF??) and an engine speed sensor (TCM) I drove it home and it only jerked really bad whenever i applied the brake. i figured it would just wear off. it also had a problem accelerating, i would press it and it would barely hit 20 but the rpms would be at 3, like it was catching, finally it would get up to 40 or so. But thats scary when getting onto the highway. Then after i got home i let it idle in our driveway. the rpms danced between below zero and 1.5. I figured it would be a problem that would be fixed by just giving it sometime. About an hour later i came out to leave and the car started fine, better than it has in a long time. but it was shaking bad!!!! I pull out of the driveway and it dies at the bottom of the hill. i turn it back on, shakes and shivers and dies, again!!! So i get a ride, come back home. Starts horibllyyyyy!!! a long time to turnover. Havent driven it since. I have just replaced within the last 3 months battery (it died on me) spark plugs (cause you change those with the battery apparently) fuel pump (the mechanic thought thats why it wasnt starting good) cam shaft sensor (thats what autozone said) i do regulaur oil changes. i keep my car full of gas. Should i replace the camshaft again, it has a 2 year warranty? is it something more considering that my car overheated?

SOURCE: Car dies while driving

I think that your crank angle sensor failed. Is the check engine light on?? if so, scan it and get code. If the code is P0335, than you need new crank angle sensor. Nissan has been having some problems with those even on other Nissan products. (Altima, Pathfinder and so on) Good luck.

SOURCE: 95 nissan maxima 3.0. have replaced knock sensor

I would have the charging system checked for over-voltage and AC ripple. There maybe a hidden wire harness problem if the charging system is okay. Wiggle test the wire harness while the engine is running to help locate the problem area. That is way to many parts replaced.

SOURCE: car jerks on freeway and engine shuts off.

It sounds like your Mass Air Flow Sensor is faulty. These sensors will normal show fault when cruising at highway speeds causing the vehicle to almost stall or stall. Replace the Mass Air Flow Sensor with a known good one and test drive the vehicle. This will most likely repair your concern.

SOURCE: White smoke occasionally coming out of my Altima tail pipes.

If there is no loss of Coolant, which is a sign of Head gasket failure to the combustion area, which generates white smoke, I would recommend after 4000 miles of your mileage alone, a complete Service of Engine Oil and filter, AIR filter and Fuel filter.
An inexpensive way to find a recurring combustion problem, At 60k miles, the Spark plugs should still be good, but pull them anyway, just to confirm.

P0118 code

Make sure you didn't accidentally unplug the ECT sensor or damage the wires. If visual inspection checks out ok clear the code and verify it comes back. If it does probably need a new sensor and or thermostat, pay attention to your temperature gauge. If it acts erratic or definitively different then normal, most likely need a thermostat. I usually just replace both and be done with it.

The engine light stays on, it has an 02 sensor. It may need a new cadillac converter and cv joint.

check engine light on when tested it says bad o2 sensor did you replace 02 sensor it takes driveing it so many miles before light will go off give it couple days you dont need cadillac converter check engine light will go off cv joint they click as you turn dont let a mechanic sell you something you dont need its very rare for cadillac converters to go bad its common for o2 sensors to go bad like yours did but when 02 sensors are replaced it takes driveing it for awhile before it resets itself you also have more then one 02 sensor was then wrong one replaced they screw into your exaust manifold

I received a P0340 on my 1995 Nissan Altima. It says I need to replace the Camshaft sensor. The dealers say that my car does not have one in it and that it may be in the distributor itself. Is this true....

They may be right. I cannot find the part. here is what the manual says:

REMOVAL & INSTALLATION The camshaft position sensor is located inside the distributor. On some distributors, the camshaft position sensor is not serviceable (replacement parts may not be available separately). If the camshaft position sensor is serviceable, use the following procedure.

  1. Remove the distributor cap and wires.
  2. Remove the rotor.
  3. Remove the camshaft position sensor cap.
  4. Remove the camshaft position sensor mounting screws.
  5. Carefully remove the camshaft position sensor.

To install:
  1. Position the camshaft position sensor in the distributor and tighten the mounting screws securely.
  2. Install the camshaft position sensor cap.
  3. Install the rotor.
  4. Install the distributor cap and wires.

My 2003 nissan altima engine misses and surges and it comes and goes it is a 4 cyl 2.3

Camshaft and crankshaft sensors are common failures on these vehicles and will give you those symptoms. Camshaft sensor is fairly easy to change (right on top on side of head on drivers side)
Crankshaft sensor is buried on backside of engine way down on the bottom.

Where crank shaft and camshaft?

The camshaft position sensor is located on the timing cover, near the top of the motor. The crankshaft position sensor is located on the same timing cover near the crankshaft. Just a side note, more than likely the crankshaft position is your issue and it's under a recall from Nissan and they will replace it for free.

Poor fuel mileage with my 02 nissan altima

yes it very possible because the catalytic converter is part of the emissions and you need to ask yourself when was the last time you had a good tuneup drive belt, sparks and wires if needed and a fuel filter and a pvc valve.
