I believe the 5 series has the same IVM module.
2006 BMW 750i - IVM module - Replaced on 5th January, 2015
Car would no longer recognize remote starter key and I could not start the car. Lights on in dash, but no noise, no starting.
Inittially thought one of my remotes were no longer good, then thought maybe it was because I had my iphone too close to the key..... None of my initial diagnostics were right, it was the IVM module. I often waited 15 minutes, then it started; then finally one day it wouldn't start at all.
Apparently the Integrated Voltage Module (IVM) has a relay in it that fails over time. The car began intermittently not recognizing the Remote (key), then failed completely. Replaced the IVM module and the car started immediatly and has started everytime since replacement. Part cost $127.US + tax at BMW dealer or $80. on line. Pretty cheap for what it has (9 connectors, a printed circuit control board, several relays and multiple fuses). Easy to replace and it took 1/2 hour to replace and is located under passenger side cabin filter (under the hood) on the 750i - there are nine (9) connectors to remove and re-install on this module. Mine was an original part Manufactured on 21 January, 2005. Tools needed: one Allen wrench and a # 10 socket. See YouTube for video.
Apparently Dealer will replace for close to $500. You can do it yourself.
Hope this helps!
