I started my 2004 BMW 5 series after a 1 hour drive ( it did sit for about 30 minutes), I then started my car and I noticed that there was a cloud of smoke that came from my exhaust pipes. I again let my car sit for another 6 hours after another 1 hour drive and upon starting it i again noticed the smoke but it only lasted for the start time and then disappeared. Is this something serious?:

Serious...no. A problem..yes. You may have hardened valve stem seals or a bad crankcase vent valve...either way it needs fixed.

Eventually the engine will build up burnt oil residue in the combustion chambers and foul spark plugs. It is also ******* those expensive catalytic converters under the car.

These do suffer from engine crank case vent failure quite often although this will trip a code and light the Check Engine lamp.

Why after driving my 2006 528i bmw say about 30 to 40 min when I turn the car off and try to start the car up again it will not start. but if I wait about an half hour the car starts right up

I believe the 5 series has the same IVM module.

2006 BMW 750i - IVM module - Replaced on 5th January, 2015
Car would no longer recognize remote starter key and I could not start the car. Lights on in dash, but no noise, no starting.

Inittially thought one of my remotes were no longer good, then thought maybe it was because I had my iphone too close to the key..... None of my initial diagnostics were right, it was the IVM module. I often waited 15 minutes, then it started; then finally one day it wouldn't start at all.
Apparently the Integrated Voltage Module (IVM) has a relay in it that fails over time. The car began intermittently not recognizing the Remote (key), then failed completely. Replaced the IVM module and the car started immediatly and has started everytime since replacement. Part cost $127.US + tax at BMW dealer or $80. on line. Pretty cheap for what it has (9 connectors, a printed circuit control board, several relays and multiple fuses). Easy to replace and it took 1/2 hour to replace and is located under passenger side cabin filter (under the hood) on the 750i - there are nine (9) connectors to remove and re-install on this module. Mine was an original part Manufactured on 21 January, 2005. Tools needed: one Allen wrench and a # 10 socket. See YouTube for video.
Apparently Dealer will replace for close to $500. You can do it yourself.

Hope this helps!

2005 545i bmw sputtering at 40 miles per hour

So, here's what you have to do - it's a frikkin tranny reset!!

Drive in manual mode M5 for 5 minutes at over 60MPH, then switch it to M6 for 1 minute, then back to M5 for 2 minutes, then back to auto.
Note: the car is going to sputter continuously when you have it on M5 for the 5 minutes.

That was it - drove around for 30 minutes afterwards and no issues what so ever!! Unbelievable!!!

My bmw 323i overheats about after 2 hours of driving my heaters work and i dont know why.

check if thermostat is stuck open as too much flow can cause this. start car cold and see how long top radiator hose takes to heat up. shoud stay cold for 3-4 minutes.
if thats ok check thermo fan operation- run can in drive way at idle for 20 + minutes untill fan starts, keep an eye on temp guage.

My BMW 525i emits gray smoke.this happens usually after I have driven a while, like to work, let it sit for a few hours then come back.Upon re-start of the car, there is a ton of smoke, but usually burns off...

You have a stuck or leaking valve that is letting oil into the cylinder when it sits. You need to have the Engine serviced and possible the Head repaired.

97 M3 chokes on clold start.

The E36 M3 is natorious for having some minor enigine hesitation immediately after a cold start. My car does this for about the first block both in the morning and after work. Its part of the engine management start routine: you will see this more specifically if you just start you car when its cold and let it idle. Initially you'll notice that the idle tone is a bit more rumbly and rough; but after about minute or so you'll notice that pitch changes and smoothes out. I was alarmed about this too, but after some research, I found it was a characteristic of the design. Just take it easy for the first block and you will never notice. Don't ever cold rev your engine. - Hope that helps.
