Check the fuses behind the dash end panel. ( End of dash between the door and dash, drivers side,)

Check bulbs are good in tail lamp holders. Access bulbs from inside trunk.

To test for 12 volt power at bulb holder, obtain a cheap 12Volt Tester from FLAPS. ( Friendly Local Auto Parts Store.)

The only thing that both the brake lights and tail lights use is a ground connection. Keep in mind the warning light on the dash may be for any exterior lamp. You may need to check the sockets and grounds on all four corners of the car.

Break lights and blinkers not working

If you put the tester on the outlets and it lights up properly but the bulbs dont, you have already concluded that the wiring isn't the problem. unless of course the wires are corroded and simply putting the bulb in shorts it out. Have you tested the bulbs?

I have pontiac montana and the shop i got it from replaced and or riged the wire harness. recently both blinker lites are always on, on the dash. and when i push on the brakes my brake lites dont work and...

check for a bad ground wire for the tail lights. You are looking for a black ground wire near the bottom of the left rear corner of the car, inside. you may need to take the trim panel off to find it. if you take out the left tail light you should be able to follow the harness to where the black wires come out and a terminal is screwed to the body. turn on the hazard lights and when you get near the problem the lights will brighten and dim.

96 contour. left tail light, 1 and 2nd break light are out.

Everything works, more or less, so you know that the switches and fuses are good. That means that you've got either bulb problems or power/ground problems. First, try swapping the bulbs around to see if the "bad" lights will work with the known "good" bulbs in them. If so, you just need to replace some bulbs. If not, check the sockets inside and out for corrosion, clean them (wire brush, steel wool, sandpaper, etc.) if necessary, and use a voltmeter or automotive tester to make sure that you have power and ground to each socket. The fast flash on the turn signal is just an indicator that a bulb is out.
