I need to replace my Egr valve. A friend wants to do it. Should i allow him or take to mechanic? Also, are there other parts i should replace while i have the valve exposed? Pep Boys wanted to replace my fuel filter at same time as valve and i was thinking the parts might be in same region of car. I have a 1996 Acura 3.5 RL. Thanks, Gregg

You may be able to remove the egr valve and spray brake cleaner, carb cleaner, or let it soak in something like seafoam for about 15 mins and the spray it with brake or carb cleaner. This works for me. Good Luck

1998 Ford Escort SE - Mechanic said that I would need a new EGR valve plus 2 other parts that go with the valve costing $350! After researching online, I found out that the valve and line may just need to...

First, you can get your car scanned at Autozone, Oreillys, or Advance for free. This will give you a second opinion and in the future try them first.

There are several problems with your information. The onboard diagnostic results are not flawless and can group a problem with 3 parts when only 1 part is bad. Cleaning a part can help a dirty part but not a broken part. Your EGR valve needs to be checked for a Vacuum leak too.

When you use any site like this, please include the Code number of the defect or ask the tester for the number. Most likely it was a 401 which is insufficient vacuum flow. The flow usually is controlled by 2 electric solenoids which regulate the EGR.

A Vacuum test can be done on the motor if you have a tool to do it or if you can get your fingers around the moving parts inside the casing. You just disconnect the vacuum line at the EGR and pull up on the valving inside the housing, and hold a finger over the line fitting. The valve should stay up and pull against your finger at the fitting.

If you want to clean the EGR, then take it out and this will allow you to test the internal parts of the valve much easier. Or you can take your old valve into a Parts store and they will recognize a bad valve and advise you.

If you go to an Autoparts store, the counter people know some of the Mechanics who trade there. You may also ask coworkers or church members where they go for their service. Some features of this site have Shops listed by city for mechanic work.

I hope you find my solution very helpful, I do not like to see people get ripped-off. There is enough honest money to be made.

How do i replace the egr valve sensor

The Vehicle would only stop, if the EGR stuck open, momentary at low speed, and dumped too much exhaust into the intake. The entire EGR Valve ,if bad, needs to be changed. The sensor is part of it. Have her find a good shop or a friend do it at home. Pretty easy.
I served in Viet Nam-so take it slow, and be safe

How to clean/check the egr valve

When the EGR VALVE is clogged or malfunctioning, it can cause irregularities in engine performance such as rough idling or valve knock, indicating that the EGR valve should be inspected.
The EGR valve works by routing a small amount of exhaust back into the combustion chamber. When the temperature in the combustion chamber is too high, nitrogen oxides are produced, which combine with elements in the atmosphere to form smog. Introducing a small amount of exhaust into the system reduces the temperature in the combustion chamber, reducing the amount of nitrogen oxides produced.

Many EGR valves are mechanical, and simply have a small valve which opens to allow exhaust into the combustion chamber and closes when it is not necessary, and to keep the air mixture optimal for combustion. Some mechanical versions will not open until there is sufficient back pressure, ensuring that the valve will not be open when the engine is idle or warming up and needs a higher concentration of oxigen for combustion. Electronic EGR valves are also available, and use electronics to regulate the valve.

If the EGR valve is stuck open, it will essentially cause a vacuum leak, leading to inefficient combustion, rough idling, hesitation, and sometimes stalling in extreme cases. This is because the car cannot combust on carbon dioxide from the tailpipe — it needs atmospheric oxygen. If the combustion chamber is flooded with exhaust from an open EGR valve, it will not function properly. To check and see if the EGR valve is stuck open, have someone idle a parked vehicle with the brake on while you examine the plunger shaft to see if it is stuck open.
If the EGR valve is stuck closed, emissions of nitrogen oxides will rise, and the car may start to knock. Spark knock happens when the fuel mixture in the combustion chamber ignites before it has been reached by the explosion in the cylinder, resulting in a disruption of the engine timing. In this instance, the engine should be warmed up and revved to see if the EGR valve will move.

In both cases, simple repairs are possible. The EGR valve can be clogged, and a simple cleaning of a mechanical EGR valve may solve the problem. In the case of an electrically controlled EGR valve or a more complex mechanical problem, replacement of the valve may be needed. The EGR valve is an expensive motor vehicle component, and care should be taken to ensure that it needs to be replaced rather than repaired. A reputable mechanic should advise you appropriately.

Failure to repair or replace the EGR valve will not lead to a life threatening condition, although it will reduce the life of your car and increase the potential emissions. Especially in areas which require smog testing, an automobile with a malfunctioning EGR valve may not pass

Took it to mechanic after it wont stay running he said it needs a crank shaft position sensor and egr valve. Where is the sensor and how do you replace it and how do you replace the egr valve. The mechanic...

what are the codes that made him think these two parts need replacing. The egr could cause a rough idle or stall, But it would need to be stuck open a little which may not set an egr code.

The crank sensor wouldnt cause a rough idle but the car could stall at times intermittantly.

What are you exact symptoms

1998 chevy pickup V8 130.000 miles running very rich. Done a complete tune up. plugs, wires cap, rotor, and relplaced one o2 sensor still running very rich. what would happen if the EGR valve is bad?

The Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) valve is an important part of the exhaust circulation system of a vehicle. EGR valves have been in use in the United States since the 1960s, when car companies were seeking ways to increase the efficiency of vehicles while also decreasing pollution. When the EGR valve is clogged or malfunctioning, it can cause irregularities in engine performance such as rough idling or valve knock, indicating that the EGR valve should be inspected.
The EGR valve works by routing a small amount of exhaust back into the combustion chamber, where it can be reused. This is done for a number of reasons. The primary reason is that a certain temperature is required in the combustion chamber, and exhaust is much warmer than air taken in from the outside. As a result, the engine need not work as hard to heat the combustion chamber to optimal temperature. The second reason is that the use of an EGR valve helps to reduce nitrogen oxides, which will combine with elements in the atmosphere to form smog.
Many EGR valves are mechanical, and simply have a small valve which opens to allow exhaust into the combustion chamber and closes when it is not necessary, and to keep the air mixture optimal for combustion. Some mechanical versions will not open until there is sufficient back pressure, ensuring that the valve will not be open when the engine is idle or warming up and needs a higher concentration of oxygen for combustion. Electronic EGR valves are also available, and use electronics to regulate the valve.
If the EGR valve is stuck open, it will essentially cause a vacuum leak, leading to inefficient combustion, rough idling, hesitation, and sometimes stalling in extreme cases. This is because the car cannot combust on carbon dioxide from the tailpipe alone-it needs atmospheric oxygen as well. If the combustion chamber is flooded with exhaust from an open EGR valve, it will not function properly.
