You can fill it from there with the engine off access and remove plug you will need a transmission funnel, start the vehicle and add half quart transmission fluid (dextron III) as you remove the funnel you should see fluid at the far bottom just dont fill it to the top just add some if you over fill it it will spew out so a little at a time we think 1998 cavalier is - cansmo_177.gif

There is a small drain plug underneath the vehicle, on the bottom of the transmission case, near the oil drain. Drive the vehicle to reach operating temp. Shut off the vehicle. Then, with the vehicle level, blocked, and on a jack stand for safety, remove the transmission fluid checking plug. If fluid runs out then you have enough fluid. If nothing comes out, slowly add transmission fluid in the top fluid plug (red, says Transmission Fluid) until fluid comes out of the check plug hole. Yeah, really. That's the "correct" way to check fluid on the 1998 Chevy Cavalier. I hope the man who designed it this way suffered a bad birthday.

Where do I check the transmission fluid

Hi, follow the detailed instruction below on how to check the Transmission fluid on your Chevy Cavalier 2001.
  1. Turn the Cavalier on and put it in neutral. Make sure your hand brake is engaged to keep the car from moving while you work on it. Open your car's hood so that you have access to the engine.
  2. Look for your Cavalier's transmission dipstick. It should stick out from the body of the engine, and be clearly labelled as "transmission fluid." Refer to your Cavalier's owner's manual for a diagram of engine parts if you have trouble locating the dipstick.
  3. Pull the dipstick out and clean it off with a rag. Reinsert the dipstick and pull it out again. Check the end of the dipstick for your reading; the transmission level will be measured on the dipstick by labels like "low," "medium" and "high." If your dipstick has no fluid on it, it means that your Cavalier is almost out of transmission fluid and needs more. A low reading also indicates a need to add more fluid. If the fluid is low, add a bottle of transmission fluid, available for purchase at auto supply shops. Add fluid and repeat this process until your dipstick shows a reading of "high" or "full."

How do you check the transmission fluid , this model has no dipstick

you will need to raise car level and engine warm, then remove plug at the front of trany near right side axle housing trany oil should run out if not then fill slowly until fluid runs out or drips out.heres a diagram to show you the check plug, you are looking at the trany from the pass/side lets say with engine removed you would be looking at the troque converter.a8465f7.gif

Where do you check the transmission fluid

It's synthetic fluid and there is no dipstick , transmission sealed.
How to check fluid:
Warm up engine , raise vehicle on the lift with engine runing on park position , unscrew drain plug (don't warry it has tube in there ), if you see fluid coming out for 10-15 sec.- level is ok.
If nothing coming out - level is low.
There is a filler tube in front of the transmission with the red cap and red plustic sealing clamp.
If you able to take clamp out without braking it , you can reuse it after.
Fill transmission through filler tube with engine runing
and trany on park position , till fluid starts runing from drain plug , reinstall drain plug , reseal filler tube.
NEVER TURN ENGINE OFF WITH TRANSMISSION DRAIN PLUG UNINSTALLED !!!!!!!!!!!

Transmission staying in low gear longer than usual, the next day same problem, then the engine overheats. Are the problems related?

this may be related, the computer will need to be scanned for any stored codes, then check your fluid level in the trany, these trucks have problems with the fan clutch and sometimes it make it feel like the trany is acting up, so have the fan clutch also checked out,

Where is the dipstick for trany located under the hood

Some models do not have a dipstick. There is a plug in the back of the tranny that you pull. with the vehicle running in park and the fluid warm, the fluid should be level with the hole. It will drain out if there is to much. The fill is ontop, there is a red plug that is hand screwed in.
