Thers only one problem with replacing a computer on a newer model vehicle and that is when you get a computer sometimes you have to "flash" the computer to put in your vin numkber and other things. If you don't your vehicle won't start or it will start and immediately die. The only place I know of that can flash computers in the dealer. A computer for your vehicle is about $900 from the dealer and then you have to pay to have it flashed. Hope this helps.

As I said in your last question, there are very few reasons you need to go near it. A good auto electrician with a professional grade scan tool computer can diagnose the ECM for faults in about 20 to 30 minutes. It is not a job for 'let's try changing this'. If it is bad, a new one needs a tech to install as it has to be programmed with the VIN Number and mileage and set up.

How can I change my ecm as it has been diagnosed as bad? 1999 jeep grand cherokee limited with a 4.7 v8

Presumably you are referring to the engine management ECU rather than any of the other black box computers scattered around the vehicle?

It is usual for cars produced in the last few decades to be fitted with an immobiliser. If your car has an immobiliser you need to take advice from the dealer about whether the replacement ECU is ordered with your car's code already installed, whether it arrives with a random code requiring the security system to be recoded or whether the ECU arrives blank and the code is programmed into it as part of the fitting process.

I have a 93 jeep grand cherokee. it will only start when the check engine light comes on. i have replaced the ecm. still not fixed. any suggestions?

Did you replace it with a re-manufactured or used ecm? If used, not all ecms are compatible with every vehicle. It has to be the exact same numbers on the ecm, matching the one in your jeep.

Hi can u help me plz my 1994 jeep grand cherokee laredo 4.0L Automatic have problem with it before I start my jeep, i have to let it sit with the key in the "on" position for 5-10 min may be more...

Your ecm is going bad. If you haven't noticed yet, the vehicle will only start once the check engine light comes on, on the dash. That's the ecm finally sending power to the relays that feed the fuel pump and ignition systems. If you're mechanically and electrically handy you can remove the ecm, disassemble it and replace the three power capacitors inside. If not, just have the ecm checked and replaced.

1994 Grand Cherokee, 5.2 V8 shuts off when hot. Cool for an hour or 2, starts up ok for a half hour or so, then dies again. No trouble codes except 12 and 55; I pulled fuses to check them, hence the code...

Your engine computer is bad. It's a good thing that you mentioned about the check engine light dying also, as this is a classic sign of a bad ecm. I have repaired more than one of these Jeep computers, replacing the three power capacitors located inside the computer, and they have worked for years afterwards. If you don't have the skills or knowledge to repair the ecm, get yourself a rebuilt ecm unit and swap it out.

My 1996 jeep cherokee sports is turning over but not starting. No voltage to input side of coil. ASD relay seems fine, crankshaft position sensor??

The CPS is one of the first places to start, but remember that the signal goes thru the ECM first, which ultimately supplies power to the coil, I've had to replace the ECM on my 96 Grand Cherokee 4.0 3 times. The dealer wanted to replace the crack and cam sensors, but it was only the computer that was bad.  Sorry I cant give you any definitive answers but I did get it to turn over when I hit the computer with a wrench!
