My wifes 2.4L PT Cruiser broke down today on the way up a large incline. She says as she drove in 5th gear with the gas consistlently down the clutch seemed to go out as it felt like she had dropped into neutral. The engine continued revving but she was getting nothing from it, and got the same results from 4th down to 2nd. While pulling over she noticed the brake pedal was stiff with pressure and would not depress, forcing her to use the parking brake to stop. After turning off the engine, it turns but will not start as if it is not getting a spark. The brake pedal remains stiff in a position of 10% depressed, and can only be pressed down half way with a lot of pressure. In neutral the car rolls fine, as it does in any gear with the clutch pedal depressed, in 1st gear with the clutch up I can barely get 10 degrees of rotation in the tires either way, and in 5th gear with the clutch up i can roll the car forward with a fair amount of inconsistent resistance.

Unfortunately, and I don't like saying this in the least, the problem is going to be the transmission leading to other issues. Your going to have to have the transmission repaired.

04 pt cruiser wont wtart

Sounds as it you have an electrical short somewhere and a connection to the Power steering pump. Did you purchase any gas while going to store? Some under ground fuel tanks can get water into them this time of year especially. If it is flooded, it will not start. Hold gas pedal to floor for 15 seconds and release, then try to start. If it does, it could be as simple as an O2 sensor or Heater sensor causing the problem. Good Luck!!

2005 pt cruiser, stuck in 5th gear

Check the gear linkage cable (very common problem) look down inside engine bay towards top of bell case (thats where the linkage meets with selector arm. Get someone to wiggle the gear stick while you observe selector arm. (if you move the air box out of the way you can reach down and de-select the gear with your hand- should get you neutral at least)... I'll keep an eye out for any reply...

Adjust clutch in pt cruiser

It happened to me, I thought clutch.....but.....in my case it was the gear shift selector bushes. too much play, meaning, under bonnet/hood look down past the battery to see where gear select cable meets the gearbox bell housing, the rubber inside the joint wears out, it happens at both ends of the gear select cable, not a big expensive job. But it can make gearshift misses or failure to engage or release. I repeat...NOT EXPENSIVE ! also, check fluid levels and check for leaks. if not these.... then you are in clutch main assembly territory...good luck. Red
