My windshield wiper (left side) stopped working the other day. The right side still works on its own and I can tell there is power because there is a very small amount of movement on the down swipe. Does anyone know how I can fix this without taking it somewhere and paying a lot of money unnecessarily? Thanks.

SOURCE: Wiper Linkage

Take off both of the wiper arms and try to use wipers if they are moving you didn't install the arms correctly. If thats the case with the arms off and the wipers running turn them off with the wiper switch and wait for them to "park", then tun off the ignition and reinstall the arms in their proper location. Also when the linkage falls off you should replace it with a new one. It is a ball and socket fitting and when it fails it spreads the plastic socket and loosens it up. It is also reccommended when you are inside there you should always replace the linkages in pairs and also check the pivots (the knurled studs that the wiper arms bolt to) for play and if necessary replace these as well. Good luck.

with wiper on try to wiggle the wiper arm with your hand. if motor is stuck this will sometimes jar it loose. you may need to do this for a minute as the wiper is a delay system. also if you can move the arm thru its sweep then it is just the wiper arm loose if this is it remove cover at base and tighten nut

SOURCE: windshield wipers stopped working on 1998 Nissan Sentra

Water can enter and displace the grease in the wiper arm linkage ball joint where the wiper linkage attaches to the wiper motor linkage.

This can result in gradual wear over a period of time inside the joint that could lead to the separation of the wiper linkage assembly from the wiper motor linkage at the ball joint. A loss of windshield wiper function can result when this separation occurs.

To prevent grease from being washed out of the joint, the dealers will modify by adding a water diversion seal that will prevent water from entering the windshield wiper linkage ball joint area.

SOURCE: wipers go too far at 50+ mph on my 2002 subaru impreza

dont know the car BUT of all the different cars i have seen there are alot built like the following. you can remove the entire arm from the stud . most likely yours is made with a plastic cap covering a nut inside on the post the arm mounts to. a small flat screw driver should suffice to remove the plastic cap ( most likely you will need a 10mm socket to remove the nut) remove the cap and the nut. pull off the arm straight up off the post. notice the splined grooves on the post. put the arm back in place slightly in a better position on the splines and re install the nut and cap.
I hope this helps. I hope your is built this way because it would be a fast easy fix.

How To Install Replace Windshield Wiper motor on a Honda Odyssey

Put the right side wiper on only. Turn on wipers. When the wiper moves all the way to the left and starts to go back to the right turn off the ignition with the wiper switch still on. Remove the right wiper arm and install the left wiper arm in the far left of the wiper movement. Turn on ignition and allow the left wiper to go all the way back to it's rest location at the bottom of the windshield. Turn off ignition and install the right side wiper arm. This will give you a start to properly set the wiper arms.

The wiper motor on my 1983 Ford Ranger still works but the wipers no longer move. I think there is a failure of the mechanical linkage. Where do I go to find repair parts?

why do you think the motor still works if the wipers don't move? Can you hear the motor run or can you see a little movement when you turn the switch on?

What happens when you activate the washers?

go to a salvage yard that allows you to remove the parts yourself. Then you can see how the motor and linkage assembly comes out.

don't have 1983 info, but here is 1994:

Section 01-16A: Wiper and Washer System, Ranger/Explorer 1994 Ranger and Explorer Vehicles Workshop Manual
DESCRIPTION AND OPERATION Windshield Wiper System, Ranger/Explorer The windshield wipers are actuated by a permanent magnet, rotary-type electric windshield wiper motor (17504) . The two windshield wiper pivot arms (17526) and windshield wiper blades (17528) are mounted on a pivot shaft, one at each side of the windshield. The windshield wiper mounting arm and pivot shaft (17566) are connected to the motor by windshield wiper adapter and connecting arm clip (17531) . Ranger and Explorer vehicles are equipped with an interval wiper and washer (IWW) system featuring a lever-type turn signal and windshield wiper switch (13K359) mounted on the steering column. The IWW windshield wiper governor (17C476) uses a relay contact to control current to the windshield wiper motor . The governor electronic circuitry controls the contact to supply current to windshield wiper motor . A rear wiper/washer system is available on Explorer vehicles. The rear window wiper system consists of a windshield wiper motor mounted inside the liftgate (40010) , an articulating windshield wiper pivot arm and windshield wiper blade , a windshield wiper/washer switch (17A553) and an inline circuit breaker. The front electric windshield washer system consists of a control switch, integral with the turn signal, a windshield washer reservoir (17618) and windshield wiper motor and the necessary windshield washer hoses (17A605) , windshield washer nozzle jet and brackets (17603) and attaching parts.

Windshield wipers not parking

The problem could be a bent parking pall bracket. This is usually caused when you wipe snow from windshield using the wipers instead of brushing off. You need to remove both wipers and the cover from the drivers side. Remove the cover over the wiper motor assembly (held by a plastic button). On the right side of the wiper mechanism is a small tab (part of the wiper bracket). This tab needs to be straight for the wiper park pall to rest against.Carefully hammer this tab straight (or you may have to replace bracket, big job) Then cycle the wiper and you will see the assembly return to park position. Re-install all parts in reverse order.
Hope this works for you.
