After new clutch installed, shifter will not engage 2nd, 4th, or reverse. It will engage 1st, 3rd, and 5th gears fine though. how can I adjust this?

  • Anonymous Feb 21, 2009

i have almost the exact same problem, i just put my clutch in not 4 days ago, and the first couple of days it worked great, and now all of a sudden it won't go into 1st, 3rd, or 5th, i just don't understand it, its also hard to put into reverse sometimes, i'm not sure if there is a way that i can adjust the cables to see if thats what needs to be done or not, i just need as much help as possible saying this is my first stick shift, and i'm new to this kind of stuff

    THANKS!!!

Your shifter cables have gona bad, i had the same problem and its not your clutch thats causing the problem. Your shifter cables are just worn out and you need to replace them

I have a 1990 Chevrolet s10 s14 s15. 4x4 4.3 v6 Tahoe engine ext cab 5 speed. Anyways I recently replaced the clutch, throw out bearing, clutch fork, slave cylinder and master cylinder and 3 weeks later...

Linkage on the trans needs adjusting to engage center fork link when springs are centered. Remove the boot over the shifter linkage to check adjustment.

2003 chevrolet cavalier, manual transmission lost 2nd, 4th and reverse but still has 1st, 3rd and 5th gears.

Sounds like one of the levers inside the transmission is either broken or otherwise disengaged. Remove the shifter to see if you can see any obvious reason.

Have 1st 2nd and reverse, no drive 1988 model 2 wd

sounds like 3rd gear clutch is out (it might have blew out a lip seal or something)
pull the pan c if there is a lot of black on the bottom of pan (no 3rd = no 4th either) the 3rd gear clutches are engaged along with the 4th gear clutches to make overdrive
if the tcc cable is out of adjustment it mite shift at wot (wide open throttle) max rpm (5000-5500)
if it just 1,2, neutral its probly clutches

Cannot shift properly

My Saturn did the same thing - twice. Where the clutch cables connects to the shifter box(??) there is a little clip that had fallen off. The first time this happened, the mechanic told me that I needed to replace the whole shifter box - costing me $400 dollars. The second time - about two years later a different mechanic charged me $15 for the clip and labor.
