Check the hood ajar safety switch that is located under the hood at one side, near the front. The switch can be tested using a VOM set on impedance to check if it does close and open. The switch can also be tested jumping and opening its contacts.

Start opening the hood and locating the switch. See the diagram below:

The hood ajar switch is not represented in service manual and parts manual shows the switch alone. The switch was not mounted in every Jeep Grand Cherokee from same year. The picture was taken from a general document about Chrysler hood switch.

You need to locate the switch under the hood. Here how the switch looks like (from Grand Cherokee parts manual):

Below two documents illustrating the two kinds of hood ajar detection system using in Grand Cherokee.

    Hood ajar 1

    Hood ajar 2

    Here troubleshooting from technical documentation:

    Open the hood.
With the DRBIIIt in Inputs/Outputs, read the HOOD AJAR SW state.
    Does the DRBIIIt display CLOSED?
Yes ! Replace the Body Control Module.
    No ! Go To 2
2 Disconnect the Hood Ajar Switch harness connector.
Using a 12-volt Test Light connected to 12-volts, check the Ground circuit.
    Does the test light illuminate?
    Yes ! Go To 3
No ! Repair the ground circuit for an open.
3 Disconnect the Hood Ajar Switch harness connector.
Connect a jumper wire between the Sense circuit and the Ground circuit.
With the DRBIIIt in Inputs/Outputs, read the HOOD AJAR SW state.
    Does the DRBIIIt display CLOSED?
Yes ! Replace the Hood Ajar Switch,
    No ! Go To 4
4 Disconnect the Hood Ajar Switch harness connector.
Disconnect the BCM C1 harness connector.
Measure the resistance of the Sense circuit.
Is the resistance below 5.0 ohms?
Yes ! Replace the Body Control Module.
No ! Repair the Hood Ajar Switch Sense circuit for an open.

How do I clear a service emissions message on a 2005 Mercury Mariner with a 3.0L engine. I have performed the required maintenance procedures at both 30,9000090's and 60,000miles. Still have message.

Warning Messages The warning messages can interrupt the display until cleared or reset by the driver. The warning messages are either single cycle, non-resettable, or repetitive warning messages.
The single cycle warning messages display once whenever the ignition switch is turned to the ON position or a fault occurs in a system, and can be cleared by pressing the RESET button. The single cycle warning messages are:
  • liftgate ajar
  • liftgate glass ajar

1996 jeep grand Cherokee hood ajar warning display flashing on center of dash I cannot find hood switch is there one.

The Grand Cherokee has a warning display. The low washer fluid warning is a blinking windshield on the outline of the jeep in the center console display. It is confusing and could be easily falsely interpreted as a hood ajar warning. Fill the window washer and srr if warning goes away.

The alarm randomly comes on for no reason, would this be related to the BCM? If not what could it be?

Some of the sensors are going bad or are too sensitive. A motion sensor or lock sensor can be intermittently setting it off. Do you have access to a scan tool ?

Message center constantly displays door ajar message

My 2003 exp-eb-5.4- had the door warning going off all the time, sometimes it seemed more rounding a corner to left. Sometimes I would see the lights on in the middle of the night. Sometimes my battery would be dead after setting a couple of days. Then I wondered if battery was causing the whole door ajar security thing. Switched battery and problem solved. Now 3 or 4 months later has started running crappy in OD, will cruise ok if holding throttle steady. Runs better by turning OD off or at higher RPMs.

The security system

Have you found any evidence of mice, turds or nests? Mice love dormant vehicles, although they usually move into the heater box. MIce love to eat the insulation off of wires. A bare wire could cause the door ajar to stay on, and may have burned the timer out of your auto lights. Have you checked the battery in the key fob? Sometimes you can just clean the battery and contacts. You have two fuse boxes one inside and one under the hood, the one under the hood also has relays in it and you want to check those out to. You may have one stuck on or inoperative. Look at the wiring harness all over for a poor ground connections. Poor ground can cause power to back feed through other components, making them suspect when the problem is elsewhere. Good luck, CB

LR3 landrover 2007 alarm goes off unpredictably often when "bonnet open" warning noted

Check the hood switch, if you see the bonnet open message on the infomation centre, once again hood switch will do this. inexpensive fix as long as you tell the dealer what to do, otherwise nice diagnostic charge.
