I changed the upper control arm assembly by removing and reinstalling the strut assembly. The wheel hub was removed from the steering knuckle in the process. When all was re-installed car will not engage in any gear (just a grinding noise) and will roll through parking gear. What is the problem?

Check the drive axle and make sure that it didn't come apart inside the boot.

The ball joint is pressed into the upper control arm and has a tapered stud for attachment to the steering knuckle. The ball joint stud is attached and locked into the steering knuckle using a special nut. The ball joint is a sealed-for-life type and requires no maintenance. If the ball joint is defective it will require replacement of the entire upper control arm.

I don't see a question here... You know what's bent... Replace it, and have the front end aligned after you're done!!! Replacing is just a take it out, put a new one back in. No tricks etc!!!

SOURCE: front hub is stuck to knuckle.

spray with penetrating oil and let sit. hit with a big hammer. if it still will not come loose remove knuckle and use a press to remove bearing.

unfortunatly no. i do this for a living and hate doing the front struts on these vehicles. Some you can skip that step, it all depends on the holes in the frame where the lower control arm fits. If you can pry the control arm down far enough you can get it out. But just when I think I can skip that step WHAM I get one that needs all of that stuf loosened. By the way have ypou checked the rear springs? I do a lot more rear loaded struts on thse than front strut replacement because of broken springs. Also dont forget to buy new sway bar links they will break most of the time tring to get them off.

I have a 2011 Ford Taurus that I'm trying to change the struts on it but I'm having problems getting it out it off

1. Loosen front strut upper mount nuts. 2. Raise and support vehicle, then remove front wheel and tire. 3. Remove wheel hub nut. Do not discard wheel hub nut at this time. 4. Remove front brake caliper anchor plate bolts and position brake caliper and anchor plate assembly aside. Support brake caliper and anchor plate assembly using mechanics wire. 5. Remove brake disc screw, then thread a M10 bolt into brake disc removal hole and tighten to press disc off hub. 6. Remove tie rod end nut, then separate tie rod from wheel knuckle. No special tools are required to separate tie rod from front knuckle; use a mallet to loosen joint. 7. Remove stabilizer bar link upper nut. 8. Detach wheel speed sensor harness from strut. 9. Remove wheel speed sensor from wheel knuckle. Position wheel speed sensor aside. 10. Remove lower ball joint nut, using a crowfoot wrench. Use hex-holding feature to prevent stud from turning while removing nut. 11. Push lower control arm downward until ball joint is clear of wheel knuckle. Use care when releasing lower control arm and knuckle into resting position or damage to ball joint seal may occur. 12. Press halfshaft from wheel bearing and hub, using a suitable front wheel hub remover. Support halfshaft in a level position. Do not allow halfshaft to move outboard. Overextension of CV joint may result in separation of internal parts, causing failure of halfshaft. 13. Remove upper strut mount nuts. 14. Remove wheel knuckle and strut and spring as an assembly. 15. Remove strut to wheel knuckle nut and flag-bolt. 16. Separate strut and spring assembly from wheel knuckle. 17. Reverse procedure to install, noting following: a. Wheel hub nut contains a one time locking chemical that is activated by heat created when it is tightened. Install and tighten new wheel hub nut to specification within 5 minutes of starting it on threads. Always install a new wheel hub nut after loosening or when not tightened within specified time or damage to components can occur. b. Torque lower strut bolt to knuckle to 129 ft. lbs. c. Torque lower ball joint to knuckle to 148 ft. lbs. d. Torque wheel speed sensor to knuckle to 133 in. lbs. e. Torque stabilizer bar upper link to 111 ft. lbs. f. Torque previously removed hub nut to 258 ft. lbs; to seat halfshaft. g. Torque new hub nut to 258 ft. lbs. h. Torque upper strut mount nuts to 46 ft. lbs. i. Torque wheel lug nuts to 100 ft. lbs.

How to replace the upper control arm

  1. Loosen the wheel nuts slightly. Raise the front of the vehicle, and make sure it is securely supported.
  2. Remove the front wheel and tire from front hub. CAUTION: Be careful not to damage the hub bolts when removing the front wheel and tire.
  3. Remove the upper arm ball joint self-locking nut(A) and the split pin(B).
  4. Using the special tools, disconnect the upper arm ball joint from the knuckle. Remove the front strut assembly
  5. Remove the two upper arm mounting bolts(A) from the body.

Removal & Installation To Remove:

  1. Remove the front wheel.
  2. Remove the front axle hub nut.
  3. Disconnect the front stabilizer link from the strut.
  4. Disconnect the speed sensor (with ABS).
  5. Remove the front brake caliper and rotor.
  6. Disconnect the tie rod end.
  7. Remove mounting bolts and nut and separate the lower control arm from the ball joint.
  8. Using a plastic hammer separate the front axle shaft from the hub.
  9. Remove the 2 mounting bolts from the strut. Remove the knuckle and hub assembly.
  10. Remove the lower ball joint from the knuckle.

  12. Remove the axle hub from the hub bearing using special tool 09520-00031 or equivalent hub puller.
  13. Remove the inner race from the axle hub using special tool 09950-40011 or equivalent puller.
  14. Remove the dust shield from the knuckle.
  15. Remove the axle hub bearing from the knuckle using special tool 09520-00031 or equivalent and a press.
To Install:
  1. Install the axle hub bearing on the knuckle using special tool 09950-600020 or equivalent and a press.
  2. Install the dust shield on the knuckle with 3 mounting bolts.
    • Tighten 73 in-lb (90 Nm).
  3. Install the axle hub on the knuckle using special tool 09950-600010 or equivalent and a press.
  4. Install the axle hub snap ring.
  5. Install the lower ball joint on the knuckle.
    • Tighten the ball stud castle nut 76 ft-lb (103 Nm).
  6. Install a new cotter pin.
  7. Install the knuckle on the strut with the 2 nuts and bolts.
    • Tighten 162 ft-lb (220 Nm) (except '03-'04) 113 ft-lb (153 Nm) ('03-'04).
  8. Lift the knuckle and hub assembly over the axle shaft and into the hub splines.
  9. Install the lower control arm on the lower ball joint.
  10. Connect the tie rod end to the knuckle.
  11. Connect the stabilizer link to the strut.
  12. Install the front rotor and brake caliper to the knuckle.
    • Tighten the 2 caliper bolts 79 ft-lb (107 Nm).
  13. Install the ABS sensor if equipped.
  14. Install the front axle hub lock nut.
    • Tighten 159 ft-lb (216 Nm) and stake the lock nut.
  15. Check the axle hub backlash and run-out.
  16. Install the front wheel.
  17. Check the front wheel alignment and adjust if necessary.

Wheel and tire assembly Brake caliper and secure it out of the way with a piece of mechanic-s wire. Do not let the caliper hang on the hose. Brake rotor Halfshaft retaining nut and discard it Cotter pin and castellated nut from the tie rod end and separate the tie rod end from the steering knuckle using a suitable removal tool. Discard the cotter pin. Separate the tie rod end from the wheel knuckle ABS sensor bolt and the sensor, if equipped Strut mounting nuts and the studs which attach the strut assembly to the steering knuckle Strut from the steering knuckle Lower ball joint pinch bolt. Carefully pry down on the lower control arm to separate the ball joint stud from the steering knuckle. Wheel hub, knuckle and bearing assembly from the vehicle

How to replace lower left front ball joint ?

Removal & Installation NOTE This procedure requires the use of the following special tools: J 9519-E Lower Ball Joint Remover and Installer, J 34874 Booster Seal Remover/Installer, J 41435 Ball Joint Installer, J 45105-1 Ball Joint Flaring Adapter and J 45105-2 Receiver.

  1. On 4WD vehicles, remove the wheel center cap and drive axle nut.
  2. Raise and support the vehicle.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    • Tire and wheel
    • Wheel hub and bearing, if necessary
    • Outer tie rod retaining nut
    • Out tie rod from the steering knuckle using a suitable puller
    • Brake hose bracket retaining bolts and bracket
    • Upper control arm-to-steering knuckle pinch bolt and nut
    • Upper control arm from the steering knuckle
    • Lower ball joint retaining nut
    • Steering knuckle from the lower control arm using a suitable ball joint removal tool
    • Steering knuckle from the vehicle
    • Lower ball joint flange with a chisel
  4. Install tools J 9519-E and J 34874 to the lower ball joint, then use those tools to remove the lower ball joint from the lower control arm.
To install:
  1. Install or connect the following:
    • Lower ball joint to the lower control arm, using tools J 9519-E, J 41435 and J 45105-2
  2. Remove the tools from the lower control arm.
    • Tools J 9519-E and J 45105-1 to the lower ball joint
  3. Flare the lower ball joint flange with J 9519-E and J 45105-1, then remove the tools from the lower ball joint.
    • Steering knuckle to the lower control arm
    • Lower ball joint retaining nut and tighten to 81 ft. lbs. (110 Nm)
    • Upper control arm to the steering knuckle
    • Upper control arm pinch bolt and nut and tighten to 30 ft. lbs. (41 Nm)
    • Brake hose bracket to the steering knuckle
    • Brake hose bracket retaining nuts and tighten to 7 ft. lbs. (10 Nm)
    • Outer tie rod to the steering knuckle
    • Outer tie rod retaining nut and tighten to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm)
    • Wheel hub and bearing, if removed
    • Tire and wheel
  4. Lower the vehicle
    • Drive axle nut, if 4WD, and tighten to 103 ft. lbs. (140 Nm)
    • Wheel center cap, if removed
  5. Check the front wheel alignment.

How to replace a front wheel bearing for a 1999

Removal: Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheel. Remove caliper assembly. DO NOT allow caliper to hang from brake hose. Always support caliper by wiring it to frame. Remove rotor.
Loosen and remove ABS speed sensor mounting screw. Carefully remove sensor head from steering knuckle. If sensor head is seized due to corrosion, use hammer and brass punch to tap sensor. Tap edge of sensor ear, rocking sensor from side to side until it is free. DO NOT use pliers on sensor head.
Remove axle shaft nut. Remove 3 bolts securing hub assembly to steering knuckle. Pull hub straight back from knuckle. If hub is corroded, pry between hub flange and knuckle
Fully remove knuckle pinch bolt. Insert pry bar between lower control arm and steering knuckle. Push down on pry bar to separate ball joint stud from steering knuckle. Ensure ball joint dust boot is not damaged during removal. Loosen and remove strut-to-knuckle nuts. Bolts are serrated where installed into knuckle. DO NOT turn bolts in steering knuckle. Use soft-face hammer to drive bolts out of knuckle. Remove knuckle from vehicle.

Installation: To install, reverse removal procedure. Tighten all nuts and bolts to specification. DO NOT fully tighten axle nut until vehicle is on ground. Ensure hub mounting surfaces are clean and free of foreign material. Coat speed sensor with high temperature grease before installing onto knuckle.

Replacing a front wheel bearing

Removal & Installation
  1. Apply the brakes and hold in place.
  2. Raise the vehicle.
  3. Remove the front tire and wheel assembly.
  4. Remove the cotter pin, lock nut and spring washer from the hub nut.
  5. While the brakes are applied, loosen and remove the hub nut on the end of the driveshaft.
  6. Release the brakes.
  7. Remove the front disc brake caliper and adapter as an assembly, and the brake rotor from the steering knuckle.
  8. Remove the nut attaching the outer tie rod to the steering knuckle. To do this, hold the tie rod end stud with a wrench while loosening and removing the nut with a standard wrench or crowfoot wrench.
  9. Remove the tie rod end from the steering knuckle using Remover, Special Tool MB991113.
  10. Remove the tie rod heat shield.
  11. Remove the nut and pinch bolt clamping the ball joint stud to the steering knuckle.

    CAUTION The strut assembly-to-steering knuckle attaching bolts are serrated and must not be turned during removal. Hold the bolts stationary in the steering knuckles while removing the nuts, then tap the bolts out using a pin punch.
  12. Remove the two bolts attaching the strut to the steering knuckle.

    NOTE Use caution when separating the ball joint stud from the steering knuckle, so the ball joint seal does not get cut.
  13. Separate the ball joint stud from the steering knuckle by prying down on lower control arm and up against the ball joint boss on the steering knuckle.

    NOTE Do not allow the driveshaft to hang by the inner C/V joint; it must be supported to keep the joint from separating during this operation.
  14. Pull the steering knuckle off the driveshaft outer C/V joint splines and remove the steering knuckle.

    NOTE The cartridge type front wheel bearing used on this vehicle is not transferable to the replacement steering knuckle. If the replacement steering knuckle does not come with a wheel bearing, a new bearing must be installed in the steering knuckle. Installation of the new wheel bearing and hub must be done before installing the steering knuckle on the vehicle.
  15. If the wheel bearing and hub need removal. Do not reuse the wheel bearing.

To install:
  1. Slide the hub of the steering knuckle onto the splines on the driveshaft C/V joint.
  2. Install the steering knuckle onto the ball joint stud aligning the bolt hole in the knuckle boss with the notch formed in the side of the ball joint stud.
  3. Install a new ball joint stud pinch bolt and nut. Tighten the nut to a torque of 70 ft. lbs. (95 Nm).

    CAUTION The strut assembly-to-steering knuckle attaching bolts are serrated and must not be turned during installation. Install the nuts while holding the bolts stationary in the steering knuckle.
  4. Position the lower end of the strut assembly in line with the upper end of the steering knuckle and align the mounting holes . Install the two attaching bolts. The bolts should be installed with so that the nuts face towards the front of the vehicle once installed. Install the nuts. Holding the bolts in place tighten the nuts to a torque of 40 ft. lbs. (53 Nm) plus an additional 90° turn after the specified torque is met.
  5. Place the tie rod heat shield on the steering knuckle arm so that the shield is positioned straight away from the steering gear and tie rod end once installed. Align the hole in the shield with the hole in the steering knuckle arm. Install the outer tie rod ball stud into the hole in the steering knuckle arm. Start the tie rod attaching nut onto the stud. Hold the tie rod end stud with a wrench while tightening the nut with a standard wrench or crowfoot wrench. To fully tighten the nut to specifications, use a crowfoot wrench on a torque wrench to turn the nut, and a wrench on the stud.
  6. Tighten the nut to a torque of 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm). Install the brake rotor, disc brake caliper and adapter.
  7. Clean all foreign matter from the threads of the driveshaft outer C/V joint. Install the hub nut in the end of the driveshaft and snug it.
  8. Have a helper apply the brakes. With vehicle brakes applied to keep brake rotor and hub from turning, tighten the hub nut to a torque of 180 ft. lbs. (244 Nm)
  9. Install the spring washer, lock nut and cotter pin on the hub nut. Wrap the cotter pin ends tightly around the lock nut.
  10. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Install the wheel mounting nuts and tighten them to a torque of 100 ft. lbs. (135 Nm).
  11. Lower the vehicle.
  12. Set the front toe on the vehicle to required specification.

How do we remove wheel bearing on 1995 Mitsubishi Galant ''S''

According to the chilton manual you have to: remove the speed sensor,caliper and brake pads,brake rotor from hub assembly, disconnect the upper ball joint from steering knuckle & pull the knuckle outward. From the back of the knuckle remove the four bolts and then remove the hub and bearing assembly from the knuckle

I need step by step instructions to replace front struts.

1.Turn ignition to OFF position to place steering column in unlocked position.
2.Remove hub nut
3.Loosen, but do not remove, three top mount-to-shock tower
4.Raise vehicle on a hoist.
5.Remove tire and wheel assembly
6.Move brake caliper and wire out of the way
7.Remove brake rotor
8.Remove cotter pin from tie rod end stud and remove slotted nut.
Discard cotter pin and nut
9.remove tie rod from knuckle
10.Remove stabilizer bar link nut, and remove link from strut
11.Remove and discard lower arm-to-steering knuckle pinch bolt and nut. (A drift punch may be used to remove bolt.) Using a screwdriver, slightly spread knuckle-to-lower arm pinch joint and remove lower arm from steering knuckle.
12.Press halfshaft from hub
13.Remove shock absorber strut-to-steering knuckle pinch bolt. Using a large screwdriver, slightly spread knuckle-to-strut pinch joint, if required, for removal
14.Remove steering knuckle and hub assembly from shock absorber strut
15.Remove three top mount-to-shock tower nuts and remove strut and spring assembly from vehicle
16.Compress spring with Spring Compressor
17.Place 10mm box-end wrench on top of shock strut shaft and hold while removing top shaft retaining nut with a 21mm 6-point crow foot wrench and ratchet
18.Loosen Spring Compressor , then remove top mount bracket assembly, bearing plate assembly and spring.
INSTALLATION
1.Place a 10mm box-end wrench on top of shock strut shaft and hold while tightening top shaft retaining nut with a 21mm 6-point crow foot wrench and ratchet to 53-72 Nm (40-53 lb-ft).
2.Install strut and spring assembly and three top mount-to-shock tower nuts
3.Install steering knuckle and hub assembly to shock absorber strut.
4.Install a new shock absorber strut-to-steering knuckle pinch bolt. Tighten to 98-132 Nm (73-97 lb-ft).
5.Install halfshaft into hub
6.Install lower arm to steering knuckle ensuring that ball stud groove is properly positioned and boot seal is not damaged. Install a new pinch bolt and nut. Tighten to 53-72 Nm (40-53 lb-ft).
7.Install stabilizer bar link to strut and install a new stabilizer bar link nut. Tighten to 77-103 Nm (57-75 lb-ft).
8.Install tie rod end onto knuckle.
9.Install a new tie rod end slotted nut. Tighten to 31-47Nm (23-34 lb-ft).
10.Install a new slotted nut retaining cotter pin.
11.Install brake rotor
12.Install brake caliper
13.Install tire and wheel assembly
14.Tighten three top mount-to-shock tower nuts to 30-40Nm (23-29 lb-ft).
15.Lower vehicle and tighten hub nut to 230-275 Nm (170-202 lb-ft)
16.Depress brake pedal several times prior to moving vehicle.
