LOOSE BELT MORE LIKELY YOU HAVE A BAD BELT TENSIONER.A BAD BELT TENSIONER WILL CAUSE BELT TO SLIP.WHEN THAT HAPPENS ALTERNATOR CANT SPIN FAST ENOUGH TO KEEP BATTERY CHARGE.AND IF YOUR WATER PUMP DONT SPIN FAST ENOUGH ENGINE WILL OVERHEAT AND YOU WILL HAVE POWER STEERING PROBLEMS ALSO HAVE DRIVE BELT TENSIONER CHECK OUT AT A GARAGE..

I need help on how to replace a ford 99 model super cab fan belt and what size belt would I need... also can I tighten the head gasket with a shifter.. cluless? ? Thank you. Carryn

First to get right fan belt you tell folks at parts store year, make & model & engine size and they look it up for you. To change belt depending in which belt you have to loosen alternator, power steering pump etc... bolts and slop old belt off new one on and retighten. (Parts folks can show you how also) If you have a bad head gasket, they need to be replaced not tightened.

I have a 1999 oldsmobile cutlass and the gas gauge doesn't work and it has the loud sweeking sound when i crank my car up and then it stops when the car warm up, i jus put a brand new belt on my car! what...

Try some bar soap on the belt before you start it for the squeal it is the alternator pulley or bearing. The alternator is trying to recharge the power back in to the battery that you used to start the car. So the belt slips on the pulley.

you call it the serpentine belt, we call it the fanbelt.it,needs tightening, slightly loosen the alternator, then pull away from engine and tighten belt, tight enough when you can move longest part of the belt, between pulleys, 1/2 inch in/out.
if squeel re occurs fit new belt.

1992 Mazda MX3 is sweeking when I turn car on...might be some sort of belt but I'm not positive.

Sounds like the belt, you're right on track. Check the belt(s) and replace if neccesary. If belts are fine, check for tightness. Should be about a 1/4" flexibility when you push down on them. If all is ok, belt dressing should take care of the problem.
Now, if for some reason, one of the components that run off the belts may be going bad, specifically a/c compressor. If it's starting to lock up, it will make your belt squeal and finally snap.

How do you tighten the belt on a 99 mitsubishi galant ls? there is only one, just changed the alternator and belt is loose, but do not see anywhere to tighten.

yes it is the serpentine belt and there is only one and you need to make sure it is on properly and that it is on the idle tensioner pully andd you have to loosen the tensioner to put the belt on and tighten it to tighten the belt look for a belt schematic on the engine compartment area of your car near the front or sodes on the upper outer area where the hood comes opver the comparment

Loud sweeking noise at start, when cold outsides

most likely your alternator, when it is cold and you start the alternator needs to recharge a heavy discharge, bearings or slip ring worn. also check the drive belt for wear,
