SOURCE: lift gate does not work in 2004 mit endeavor
This is due to the microswitch inside the glass hatch failing. It will not let you open the door because it is unsure if the glass is open or not.
Here is how to verify this:
Manually open the glass hatch.
Remove the two philips screws from the cover on the back of the handle area, and unscrew the plastic plug with the slot in it.
You should now be able to remove the cover.
You will see the harness coming off the glass handle going to a connector. Unplug this white two wire connector.
Your rear hatch should now open normally, just without glass opening.
To repair this, you will need to replace the glass hatch handle. It is a dealer-only part, and the cost is about $35.
To replace it, simply remove the 2 10mm nuts behind it (visible with the cover off that you just removed) and replace the handle and plug it back in.
Now all functions will work.

Today is your lucky day. Get inside of your vehicle to open the lift gate and then open the glass from the inside as well . From the outside of the vehicle with the gate down and the glass open you will see the cover on the glass held in place by two screws. Remove this cover to expose the micro switch for the glass opening handle. You will see a small white connector and with a little patience you can remove this connector. If the glass switch is bad your hatch will now open and your glass should close without having to lock the locks. The switch is a dealer item and goes for around $50 and a bit more dissassembly of window to replace switch/Handle. Happened to me and cost 100 just for them to tell me what was wrong. I used a stick to poke the safty latch for almost two yrs

Push down and lift and push and lift while someone else flips the remote or the button in the car.Did you check the fuses? Under the dash most likely on the drivers side is where you'll find thefuse box. if the diagram is there on the fuse box cover outside or inside it should say trunk, or storage, or bonnet or something ofthe sort. If not then pull each fuse one at a time and look for the wire inside the fuse to be melted. It should be a solid wire. Look for bunrt spots in the corners too. It may not show where the wire is burnt but black marks indicate bad fuse. Replace with same amp fuse just like the one that came out of it. While your there might as well check them all. Sometimes a domino effect happens and more then one fuse goes. If you replace it and the trunk opens and then fry's another fuse right away then there is a short some place and you'll need to trace the wiring. That part is above my knowlege. I hope this helped you and please allow me a good thumbs up as I am trying to keep my score impressive. Good Luck, The Raz Shack

If one of the "suspension" or Lift Support" parts to the rear hatch fails. The other one will not have the energy to keep the hatch open. When the hatch gets to a certain point the door closure senses inaccurately that someone is pushing the hatch down to close. The reason behind this is that there is enough force on the engine lifting it that it is "tricked" into thinking that it is being closed.
This is probably the most likely explanation. The solution is to replace the weak lift support.
Here is a link to a supply house that should have the replacement. It is important to follow the instructions when installing this item.
