I have a std 5 speed nissan maxima SE 1998, and i change the ECU because when i got the car had the ECU from a automatic maxima so the check engine light it was on, because the car is std, so i change the ECU for another one from a Infiniti Q30 1996 std, and since i change de ECU the check engine light is on for the P0136 code wich is the rear oxigen sensor, but the sensor was working fine before this ECU, and i did replace the sensor 3 times already, what can i do?

Rear 02 is catalytic convertor here the thing 5 spped and automatic will not make a difference on the engine management it doenst manage transmission control it seperate in the ECM if you have the old one the prom is removable is you dont lets deal with what you got the rear or is a heated circuit so you need to check for 12 volts on the white wire and ground at the black if it all check out then you need to check the signal wire for activity if you get a lot of activivy you got a bad catalytic

1998 Nissan Maxima SE automatic. There is a strong fuel smell in cabin, and terrible gas mileage.

Question edited for clarity and into written English and to what you thought you were saying.
Question moved to the correct category.

You have multiple issues (engine management, fuel management, ECM and BCM) that can only be diagnosed by an auto electrician with a pro grade $5,000 scan tool computer and the skill to use it.

RPM rising and falling on Nissan bluebird fuel and ignition seems ok

1998 Nissan Maxima bluebird?
did not bluebird end in 1994?
ill answers for 1998 USA, if car is a JDM , well that be different

you have idle surge, (aka hunt)
the ECU controls idle at all times.
there are 10 or 2o things that can cause surge.
many tests. are you up for tests and buying tools, or just want a wild guess>?
1: EGR mains stuck open.
2: ISC stick (electric idle valve)
3: TPS switch ,not closed, at idle (that kills idle controls dead
4: lean AFR. and ISC has lost control or makes it hunt.
5: intake air leaks.
6: ECU in limphome. the USA cars (no location stated, bad)
all usa cars have OBD2 this year, ever use a $7 scan tool yet?
CEL stuck on running. never pulled the DTC errors?

ill stop here, there are 10 more. at least.

I have a 1998 Nissan Maxima GLE, engine was replaced with a 1998 SE engine. Since then, I have been having problems starting. I get a boost and once I move the car and park it, it won't start again....

there is a problem with your iginition timing. it is most probably overly advanced. have an experienced mechanic check your ignition timing. the mechanic should check the distributor, camshaft, and crankshaft timings.

I have a 1998 Nissan Maxima SE with 292,000 miles. the service engine soon light came on. What do I look for?

I would look for a human holding a diagnostic analyzer to hook up to the car's interface to get the error
codes which point to the bad component or system. These people can be found at repair shops and dealer service departments.
