Why wont my 1989 honda civic start ? i replaced the starter and battery, wont start, not even off a jump start, but will off a push start get a dull thud sound from the main relay, could it be bad ?

Your Civic has a manual tranny - correct? The problem could be a bad Clutch Safety switch. Many Hondas are listed as having this switch with the manual tranny. The switch prevents the car from starting if the tranny is in gear and the clutch is not depressed, preventing the car from lunging forward. If the switch is there , it is located on the clutch pedal bracket. The switch has two wires, so if you remove the electrical plug from the switch and jump the plug, maybe the car will start? Good Luck!!!

Wont start

Is there any work done on the Civic before this no start condition?
====
Use a bottle of yellow HEET dry gas to remove any moisture problem in the fuel.

Clean / replace air filter.

Top off ATF to MAX level.

Use starting fluid to aid starting.

My car is stalling when slowing down or coming to a stop. I think it is a vacuum line. HOw can I get a a diagram for a 1989 Honda Civic DX Hatchback 1.5 motor

Your emission system (including vacuum lines) should be on a diagram on the bottom of the hood of your car. If not, leave a comment, and I will investigate further.
Hope this helps.

1989 honda civic-starts on some occasions and won't start on others. What are some possible solutions?

If you are referring to no crank when you turn the key then I would say the starter is going bad.If it cranks and wont turn over(run) I would say check the coil.

89 civic just dies and will start up after about a hour

Sounds like an electrical problem; I'm not that familiar with Civics, but I would check your ignition coil and/or fuel pump. It could be that after these things heat up, they stop working; I've had that happen on an older GM vehicle.

Car wont start

Basic things,

Is the cranking speed good? Slow?

Is the fuel pump working? If yes..
Is the fuel filter clogged?

Are the drive teeth on the starter itself ok?

Do you have good compression in all cylinders (if it is low then assume a slipped timing belt.)
