The TCC solenoid in the transmission needs to be replaced. It is under the side cover. It controls the converter to lock up for better fuel mileage. If you want to drive car until you get it fixed you can un-plug the connector going to the transmission on the front of transmission. This will keep it from going to lock up mode and keep it from stalling until you can fix it. Common problem.
it has to be running and in neutral to engauge the 4x4. shift to neutral, then push the 4x4 option that you want. 4wheel high you can use almost any sensible speed.4wheel low is only for low speed 15 to 20mph is best for 4wheel low, otherwise will damage engine or transfer case. when you take it out of 4x4 it has to be in neutral also. thank you for choosing fixya.com
Try putting the key in the 1st position (steering unlocked but no dash lights) and see if you can shift to neutral and then start the car in neutral. If not check and see if the brake lights work with the car running if not check the fuses or the brake light switch. Good Luck.
