We are buying a used 1997 Buick Riviera and it has no remote entry with it. We also don't have the user's manual to get the code for the radio. We had to disconnect the battery because the alarm was somehow triggered and without the remote, there is no way to turn it off other than disconnecting the battery. We are on a fixed income, so taking it to the dealer to unlock is not possible at this moment.

A 96 is OBDII, you can not pull codes with out a code reader.
Up until roughly 94 on some models it was possible to jump 2 pins on the diagnostic port. The check engine light would then blink the codes.
You can buy a relatively inexpensive code reader or about $50.

id recommend going and buying a haynes or chiltons manual on it. youll need a spring compressor- these can be rented at most local parts stores, a good socket set, and a lot of patience!
Disconnect your battery (make sure you know radio security code if you have one) Unbolt starter, lower it and remove wires. Some twisting and turning may be required to get it out. Reverse process to install.
