My 2000 Toyota Avalon gas gauge reads 3/8 of a tank when empty. The computer on the tells me miles left in tank. The computer is right but the gauge misreads the tank by 3/8 of a tank. How many wires come off the sending unit? Is there a splitter (one to computer and one to gauge) if one wire. What are the colors of the wires? Any ideas what may be wrong

SOURCE: Gas Gauge not reading correctly

The most likely culprit is the sending unit in the tank. They are relatively easy to change, as long as you don't have much fuel in the tank. It's a mechanical unit that has a float that raises and lowers with the fuel level, however with age, the floats can develop leaks and no longer float, of the electronic portion of the unit can go bad and not register the proper level. They are replaced and an entire unit, so it doesn't matter which happened, you will need to change the fuel tank sending unit.

SOURCE: Recommended type of struts for 2000 Toyota Avalon

II have found over the years that a company called MONROE makes a very high quality strut (around $50 each) and have never had a problem with them, they come in a gas charged strut cartriage and this is what u want, there are others out there but many like BILSTIEN that ride really rough and cost around $100 each

the other areas the fault could be located are in your meter circuit plate (which is part of your combination meter), it could be in the wiring, or possibly your multi display (also part of your combination meter)

New Toyota Yaris showing only 27 miles left in tank , I put fuel in but still shows only 27 miles in tank but fuel gauge has risen to nearly half How do I reset the estimated mileage left in tank

if you read the owners manual it will tell you that the unit will not reset properly with only fuel added
that means to get it to read right again you have to fill the tank completely

Fuel gauge reads empty

most fuel gauges will tell you you are empty when the is only 25 to 50 miles of fuel left. if it stops after filling with gas then you are ok, just don't let it go below a 1/4 tank. If it always reads empty the the problem is probably the float in the tank needs to be replaced. You will need to have a mechanic replace it. check several places for costs.

Today while I was driving, The instrument where it telles you how many miles left till empty read 27mi. all of a sudden it started counting down rapidly, within seconds it had went from 27 mi to 4mi left...

Sounds like float in fuel tank is sticking. Usually caused by using cheap gas. Fill it up and add a bottle of STP gas treatment. It might take more then one tankful w/STP to clean it completely. TIP: don't rely on the computer generated "mileage left" especially when that low on fuel, that is only an estimate. And also don't let it get that low on a regular basis because it will damage your fuel pump, fuel is used to cool electric pump in fuel tank and running it that low will shorten the life of your fuel pump.
