If both are not working, check your brake light fuse and then bulbs for burnt filaments. If ok, could be wiring or brake light switch located at the back of the brake pedal. To eliminate the switch, if your car is equipped with cruise control, try to engage it and if it works, the switch is good, if not, switch is bad as the cruise control needs a good working brake switch to engage the cruise.

For the brake lights....
Look under the dash, on the brake pedal arm. There are one or two switches that activate brakes lights and shift unlock. Check for loose mounting nut or a missing rubber nubber. Look on the floor for something not usually found there. These switches are adjustable and it may be as simple as adjusting them. Have a helper look for brake lights on and shift lever unlocked while you push and release the switches with your finger. Depress the brake pedal to get it out of the way. Remember to set the park brake first. Could just be a bad switch or loose connector. Check fuse #23 located on passenger side/end of dash(open the door) and the bulbs.

For the headlamps....
Check fuse #39 located on passenger side/end of dash(open the door), and check fuse #12 located in the power distribution box on the drivers side of the engine compartment. (you will have to remove the metal strap covering it first). Could also be the dash headlamp switch or even the dimmer switch.
Good luck!! and let me know what you find.

Can not get my tail lights to work onk 1989 gmc truc

The front park lights work correct? If the front park lights work than there is not a problem with the light switch since the brown wire from the switch supplies power to the front park lights, front side markers, and the rear taillights. There should be twelve volts on the brown wire from the headlight switch with the connector plugged in and the park lights turned on. If this is true that there is a problem with the wiring to the back of the vehicle. A thorough inspection of the harness should reveal the problem. The dim break and blinkers support the above. High resistance also know as corrosion, in the wires or connections would cause this problem.

Front lights ( Dims ) come on when I press break pedal

Sure sounds like someone transposed the power leads from the brake peddle and the light switch - or the ground is bad - and a back feed of power is causing this.
I suggest pulling the Headlight fuse to determine if that feeds the head or brake lights. Same with the brake fuse.

Ground feed back is most likely and most difficult to identify. A bad connection to ground - somewhere - can do some weird things to lights.

Dash lights, starting, heater blower, head lights & blinker

Before going crazy with this, check all engine and body grounds to make sure everything is connected. it's possible something was left a bit loose when doing cylinder heads. Wont hurt to go over the positive battery and alternator connections as well!
