My 2002 Kia Rio with manual locks also wouldn't unlock. the connecting rods would bend enough that I could pull the inside plunger up or turn the key, but in either case it would snap back when I let go, and the door remained locked.

The problem is a broken spring at the latch mechanism. Getting it unlocked is a matter of wiggling and banging the handles and lock until the lever the spring is supposed to control moves. The lever is in line with the car, so gravity might help if you park facing uphill or downhill. I wish I'd inspected the latch carefully enough to tell which.

Once the door is open, remove the interior door panel. The hard part is the window crank: push the heavy wire clip off the crank's shaft between the crank and the panel. Save the plastic sheet inside the panel; it protects the mechanisms from collecting moisture in your interior and rusting. A few screws and a snap or two will allow you to lift the panel up off the inside lip of the window.

The latch is held in by the 3 big screws in the door's edge, but you also need to disconnect some connecting rods that go to the various latch and lock handles. The plastic clips that hold the rods into their levers can be rotated to unsnap from the rod, the the rod can be pulled easily our of the clip. You'll see when you try it.

On mine, I found a broken spring that had connected two hooks right across the top of the latch mechanism. I came online to find a replacement spring or mechanism and ended up here, but my rubber band I cut from a bicycle inner tube is working fine for now.

Go ahead. Say something about fixing a broken Kia with a rubber band.

This is a common problem on Kia, see here.
When this happens it is because the door latch is jammed, in this case pulling on the push rod won't open it.
You can partially remove the door panel to bypass the latch, so that you can help the door to open from the inside, but this is not an easy job, and you risk to cause further damage.
Better to take the car back in to the car dealer for a quick repair.

Don't have an answer, but I can tell you it's not always what it seems... My door latch assembly and the candle base was replaced had the same issue would t open, after getting it fixed I went to go try it myself, and the door still didn't open.. So I replaced the latch assembly for no reason at all, still haven't solved the problem.. My 2013 Kia Sportage still at the shop! Ugh!!

SOURCE: my drivers side door wont

Hi

This is probably a broken spring on the door latch. Remove the driver's door inner panel, put the window fully up look at the lock mechanism and linkages and with the lock unlocked maneuver the lock linkages to open the door.

However you need to clarify if you mean open the door or unlock the door. It sounds like you mean unlock the door. First I think you probably need a new key. When the door is locked and you are inside the car. Pull on the inside door handle. That is supposed to unlock all the doors. the second time you pull on the handle it should open the door. If you can't get anything to work by pressing down on the knob in the door you probably need a new lock acatuator. You can't swap left to right. it doesn't work that way. the lock actuator is a rectangular black box that clips onto the top of the lock. Try disconnecting the wires to it and see if that helps.

If you can't open the door by using either handle or key, the actuator and likely the lock mechanism will need replacing because it is the lock mechanism that hooks into the door handle.Furthermore, if you can't open the door with the key, then the door handle components or just the tumbler is likely not lubricated enough. You may also need a new tumbler for the door handle. This doesn't need to be drilled out. Its actually pretty easy to swap tumblers once you get the handle out of the car.

2002 Kia Rio haTCH WONT OPEN. DO NOT HAVE KEY. LOCKSMITH SAID I MUST TAKE LOCK OUT FOR HIM TO MAKE KEY. BUT i CANT GET HATCH OPEN

If you can get the rear hatch trim off with the door closed, then you could release the lock mechanism from the inside. If you cannot get the rear hatch trim off, then you will have to do this from the outside. Either the locksmith can key it while still in the car, or you will have to destroy the old lock and get a new one.

2002 Kia Rio with Manual locks My passenger side door won't lock/unlock; with/without key, or even open at all. And I haven't ever been able to lock/unlock, that door with the key but the door was opening...

I too have had the same issues with my 2004 Kia Rio. I personally believe that this should have been a recall in the door locks. I went to a pick and pull and retrieved the drivers side and passengers side locking mechanism from both doors (not the locks themselves because I needed to use the same key) and one worked like a charm and the other didnt. I since have went back and got another one and that one stopped working correctly. It seems that this a major issue with these cars.

Kia rio 5 door 2004 drivers door wont open. Removed cent lock fuse but still wont open inside or out

Sounds like a rod might be off inside of the door and the door panel will need to be removed to access the latch and get the door open. Once the door is open, have the problem fixed before you close it again.

Doors not opening

I have a 2005 Kia Rio. The passenger door would not open (using inside or outside handles). Found out that one of the three bolts holding the door lock became loose just enough that the head of the screw rubbed against locking mechanism. Had to kick the door (from inside) open. It worked. Replaced screw and all is well.

Central locking opens and then shuts again within a second

I think central locking is a system so if it doesnt work try seeing if it can be replaced, or completely taken out and revert to manual unlocking.
