1984 240 SW. Why is engine knocking loudly?

Good start, but be sure to double check the firing order? Looks like long plug wires? Also, did you replace the rotor in the distributor? Could also be a hair-line crack in distributor cap...be sure to add 2 bottles of liquid Heet to remove water from the tank...Hope this helps.

Distributor cap firing sequence

Set the crankshaft so number one piston is about to fire and the distributor rotor arm will be pointing to the number one distributor cap segment - connect the number one spark plug lead to this.

Note the direction of distributor rotation and each lead in the firing order should be connected to each segment in that direction...

What is the firing order on a 1984 f 150 six cyl

1 - 5 - 4 - 2 - 6 - 3 - 7 - 8

The distributor rotor turns COUNTERCLOCKWISE

The marked # 1 position on the distributor cap faces to the rear and slightly towards the drivers side of the engine

The engine cylinders / spark plugs are numbered : passenger side , front to rear , 1 , 2 , 3 , 4 and drivers side , front to rear 5 , 6 , 7 , 8

My 1998 Saturn SL is not running as smoothly and

Wow, that's a tough one, if you've done all that and it still overheats, I would try replacing the temp sensor, maybe it's faulty. Plus they're pretty cheap( I like fixing things for cheap)
If that's not the problem you could try a lower temperature thermostat, and if that doesn't work I would suspect that something is preventing the coolant from moving through the block effeciently.
Where is the temp sensor?
I had a Buick that the temp sensor was on the top of the block and if the coolant level went down AT ALL it wouldn't cool the sensor and it registered as dangerously hot and give me a heart attack in the process.
As for a tune-up get anew distributor cap, rotor, spark plugs( and spark plug wires if you want it to REALLY be tuned up)
This will probably cost you in the range of 50-100
bucks, but a little preventive medicine goes a long ways.
I had a bad plug wire I thought was an ignition problem and spent 300$ in parts trying to fix.
One day I went "I wonder if it's the plug wire?"
I bought one for 8.88$ and now it runs like a brand new car.
Hopefully one of these things will work.

Have no spark in lebaron 4 cyl! 87 LEBARON

Remove the distributor cap, check to make sure the plug wires didn't lift out of cap,Have someone turn engine over while you watch if rotor is turning.
If those two things are ok,Lift rotor off distributor shaft,The ignition modular
is the round black plastic piece under the rotor. It just lifts out and has a wire plug to undo.Replace this.

I bought a 2000 civic with 67000 miles on it and it ran ok and was getting 38mpg notknowing about the car i bought plugs wires and distributor cap ingition rotor it had autolite plugs in it so someone had...

the only thought that comes to mind is to re-check your spark plug gap, the reason is that if the gap is slightly larger, plug efficiency will drop, thus fuel economy and power, please confirm that some platinum plugs the gap is not adjustable, (.044 thousands) good luck!
