My 1999 Toyota Previa 4x4 (0nly 70,000 miles) has been regularly serviced and kept in good order. Last week the ABS warning light lit up and remains on whenever the car is being used. My regular Toyota garage checked it and reports that all four sensors and the control unit need to be replaced. Two very experienced Toyota mechanics tell me that such a wholesale failure is unique in their experience. Am I right to seek a second opinion?

I would want a 2nd opinion as all 4 sensors failing at the same time would be rare.More likely, just one abs sensor is bad.

SOURCE: Toyota Vitz 2003: (ABS and HandBrake warning light constantly on)

this is a common first sign of your antilock brake computer failing. You will most likely never feel a difference in your car but there is a slight chance all your safety features will not operate properly in a collision.

predetonation, called ping can result from poor quality fuel, and high outside air temperature,it happens at lower speeds under load. a rattle could also be from the heat shield around the catalytic converter,it would buzz more if you wer idling and turned up the fan,the fan pulls quite a bit of current, and tha a/c will load the engine a bit.

SOURCE: Toyota 4Runner/maintenance schedule at 140K miles

The maintenance schedule is an outline and should be followed if you want to keep your vehicle in good condition. the maintenance items listed in the schedule are performed at their set intervals for a reason. Manufacturers have found the wear limits on certain parts and those parts may need to be serviced or replaced at those intervals or catastrophic failures may result.

SOURCE: ABS LIGHT ON / BAD WHEEL SPEED SENSOR / HOW TO REPLACE

You can do it yourself. One bolt. Check the plug and wires before you replace the sensor. A stick or whatever can break a wire and the sensor reads bad, but really it just needs a wire. Worth a quick look before you spend the $ on a new part.

Meaning of ABS light

On vehicles equipped with antilock brakes (ABS), a second warning light is provided to warn if a problem occurs within the ABS system. The ABS lamp comes on when the ignition is turned on for a bulb check, then goes out after the engine starts. If the ABS warning light remains on or comes on while driving, it indicates a fault has occurred in the ABS system.

What happens next depends on the nature of the fault. On most applications, the ABS system disables itself if the ABS warning light comes on and remains on.

There is a maintenance light on with an exclamation point. What does this mean

It reminds you to do your 'regular scheduled maintenance' of your car.
Example: 50,000-miles, 70,000-miles, 100,000-miles, etc. These warnings are already programmed in your car's computers to simply remind you so the car is kept in top shape, and peak performance.
In some cases, if this maintenance warning is ignored, the car may not keep its peak performance or even break down, having to be towed.
The concerned car's authorized dealer usual performs these regularly scheduled maintenance, but competent independent auto repair shops, such as Midas, are able to do these reagular maintenance as well.

1998 toyota tacoma has 165000 miles, what services would help it

Drive it regularly and keep up with the maintenance as you have. I have an '88 Toyota P/U with 70,000 mi. on it and though it did sit up for a good while, regular maintenance has kept it running.
Power? Check the timing and if it is off replace the timing chain. That is all you can do, honestly.
Please remember to rate this solution.

Service Brake system flashed three seperate times over 24 hours

2 suggestions:

(1) I would suggest someone scan the ABS system for codes. I Have an '03 silverado 2500HD Crew cab, and it needs an EBCM (Electronic Brake Control Module) "ABS module". "Service Brake System" message on dash, ABS and Brake warning lamps lit as well. May be the R/F ABS wheel speed sensor, but what you described happen, shouldn't have caused damage to it.
(2) If the aftermarket rim and tire combo are larger than stock (larger overall diameter), then this may affect the way your PCM functions. You can reprogram the PCM to recognize larger diameter running gear so trans shift points and the speedometer and such can function properly.
I hope this helps.
