2002 Ford Focus and Wacky Speedometer

I am having some issues with my speedometer. Sometimes (almost randomly), the speedometer will go higher, all the way to 220km/h, no matter what speed you are going. This is also the case if you are stopped and in neutral or 1st gear. The engine is not revving during the time the speedometer is changing, but if you're stopped, the car will sometimes stall. Please help!

I had the same thing in my 2002 ford focus about 8 months ago. under acceleration it would wrap out on the speedo and tach, and then go back to the true levels a couple seconds later. this happened probably two dozen times. next it began to have a hard time starting, even with a jump. ended up being my alternator was bad, i replaced that one part and it hasnt done it any more.

Speedometer needle wacky

I wouldn't imagine so. Unless it is from a different transmission, different gear ratios will tell the computer to display an inaccurate speed.

My 92 honda civic speedometer works only half the time

check the connection from speedometer to transaxle. Often this becomes loose, especially the transaxle side. Also 92 was a first year model and have heard many wacky problems.

Speedometer and air conditioning problems - Ford Focus Saloon

The VSS (vehicle speed sensor) sends the signal that activates the speedometer. Interestingly enough the signal is also sent to the radio to adjust the volume for road noise. That would explain your perception that it is worse when listening to the radio. Now, solving your problem may not be as easy as following the link between these two devices, but I would check the vehicle speed sensor first.

Speedometer Stops

Most cars Speedometer cable connect to one of the front wheels, but you said your speedometer sometimes stop then your steering wheel will go stiff, I think you should fix or change your speedometer cable, maybe the cable broken inside. Fix it as soon as possible for your safety.

Speedometer cable has two parts, one is outside cable, mounted and connect to both speedometer and wheel.

The other one is an inside steel cable, outside cable protects the inside cable, because the inside cable turns as soon as you move the car. It is directly connect to the wheel gears and the speedometer inside.

If your car has speedometer cable, I think you need check it right away.

Your steering wheel sometimes stiff, you also need to check your power steering fluid level, sometimes cause this kind problem.

Hope this can help you and if you have more questions, please use whatever the Fixya allowed, contact me to discuss this matter and others. Thank you.
