My 95 Lexus ES300 timing belt broke. The cam gear is exposed. I like to know how serious is this problem? And, how much is reasonable to fix?

Very serious. If you have the time and tools you can do the repair yourself. Doing so you are looking at replacing the head Gasket, Front cover seal, Intake and exhaust Manifold seals, and Timing belt for sure. Once you get it open you want to have the Head assembly checked to make sure that no valves were bent when the timing belt broke. Depending on if you can maneuver the engine to get room to remove everything you will need to remove you may have to remove the engine to do this repair. Their are many repairs that can be performed on the motor while it is installed but there are some that can not and the only way to identify which is which you have to consider how much room you have to work and how you can manipulate the motor. I highly recommend you get the Haynes or Chilton's repair manual on your vehicle so that you have the step by step instructions on how to realign the motor and timing marks and on how to remove all the components that must be removed to do this job. One of those will also give you a list of any special tools you may need to do the job.

This is very serious as the pistons come up and hit the valves and bends them. its hard to give a price without knowing how much damage is done but i can say at least 1500.00 to 2000.00.

How do I reset my timing on a 2001 lexus gs 300?

You must go back and remove the timing belt to re-align the marks for the cam and crank. There is no other way to adjust.

Timing marks for cams

On the gears at the end of the cams usually. Turn them until they're aligned and put the chain back on per manufacturer specs.

Sounds like you got some bogus advice. First go to your local library and check out the repair manual that covers your vehicle. This manual will instruct you on how to carry out most all common repairs. The belt you reference is probably not the timing belt, but that's something you'll learn when you find the repair manual for your car. By the way you should have your own repair manual for your car. It's very valuable, and can give much needed info to help decide if you can do the repair you're contemplating (is in your experience level). You'll make things worse if you can't/won't follow instructions. Most repairs can be done by the owner (in my opinion). If you know basic hand tools and do this one thing - always read the instructions beforehand to be sure you understand what the particular repair entails. Also this will alert you to the need of any special tooling to complete your task. Once you find a repair manual at the library you can compare the different brands. Chilton manuals are very popular, but there are others out there, and you may prefer them. Good luck.

Camshaft gears

Right hand thread, just tight. You need to hold the cam itself with something solid, don't rely on the timing belt, then if you have a 3/8 impact gun, carefully rattle the bolt out. If you don't have the impact gun available, you could try getting someone to hold the cam while you put the box end of a wrench on the bolt and tap the open end. When tapping, I wouldn't use a hammer, it's too massive, use a small steel bar, like a 1/2 inch extension about ten inches long. The idea is to set up small impacts that loosen the bolt, without twisting the cam.
